Default Grady White 273 Chase - good, bad and ugly?

Looking for a top quality, practical family cruiser with very good off-shore capability to visit the islands on south coast of New England (15 - 30 miles offshore max).

Would a late model Grady White 273 Chase with Yammie 225 four strokes (and decent electronics) do the job? Or, is the Chase 273 just a glorified, trailerable, big lake boat?

I know the GW 283 is a much bigger platform, but so is the price. All comments welcome - -good, bad and ugly. Thanks.

It appears many have left this site as a year ago this thread would have at least 20 posts. I have several friends who own or have owned this boat. It is a good, solid, well designed CC. There are boats which will ride better in a headsea at the expense of roll and stability. GWs are designed to be multi-purpose boats with many family and cruising features. Many other boats are pure cruise or fish oriented. Pursuit, BW, Scout are similar muliple purpose boats.

The best advice is always to determine your needs, make a short list of models which meet those, then comparison shop. Price, service, ride, amenities, condition (used), engines, equipment (used), etc. are all factors. You can get specific info from owners at www.greatgrady.com. Good luck.

I like mine...It's a great all around performer.
With the 225s, rigged for fishing we usually get around 1.8 -1.9 mpg around 31-33mph.
The boat rides great although can get pretty wet when the weather kicks up....it is also
very stable on the drift. All in all, I'm very happy with it. -pcww

I see you are from New England so I can only assume that you Block Island, Martha's Vinyard and may some Long Island sound boating.
That boat will be fine, but weather is important.
Bigger boats have sunk right outside of NewHarbor during rough conditions.

Check the waves and wind direction (for me out of Ct - a solid westerly wind sucks for the return)

I have one....love it...great all around boat......VERY economical with the F225's. I run 70 miles offshore too......PM me if you want more details..I have run mine extensively and it is still pristine. Everyone that has fished with me has been very impressed with the fishability of the boat....

Islander 270. Same hull. Lots of fishing in the lower Chesapeake Bay, and lots of runs 50-75nm offshore.

What more, specifically, are you looking for?

As I noted above, we have the same hull on our 270. We've put over 1000 hours on our engines in six years, have been in flat calm and really bad conditions. Made a 150nm run down the Chesapeake in conditions that I hope never to repeat again. Regularly run 70-75nm offshore to the Norfolk Canyon.

A well-built, easily-driven hull form.

Are clean, late model (say 2003 - 2006) with decent electronics and four strokes worth in the mid to upper $70k range since so many other center consoles are out there in this slow boat market?

Used boat prices are dependent on many factors but it really comes doen to supply and demand. The net gives the ability to see many models for sale very easily. You should be able to gauge the value by what is on the market. A boat is worth whatever someone is willing to pay much like the housing and auto markets.

For a boat of its size, it has limited fish box space. 104,104, 185 qts. This is the biggest drawback I can Identify. Other than that its a great boat. You'll probably have to bring a large cooler out if you're fishing for large fish. Good luck!

Even the 232 gulfstream (cuddy) has more fish box space 297, 265 qts and a larger livewell 36 vs 32 gallons

Brian,

Looking at a chase 273 with dual f150 yamahas on it. Is the boat underpowered with these engines? Did you choose the 150's or did the boat come with them originally? Would you do it again/rec the 150's for the 273 chase?

thanks,

Wally

Answered separately. But for any others...

We purchased the boat new with a single 250HP OX66. After 465 hours we repowered, primarily for better fuel efficiency so we could have the range to fish offshore.

The F150s on here are great. Easy cruise at 25-28kts, and WOT with a heavy load is 37kts. Fast enough for me, and for most weather conditions we encounter.

Welcome to the forum Mike.
I can't answer any questions about that boat, but wanted you to know the thread is 3 1/2 years old. Good luck.
