Default Duo-prop, prop shaft leaking oil/water....ouch!!

My large prop shaft is leaking oil/water. Has anyone ever removed the prop shaft and replaced the seals? Can it be done without buying $500 in tools? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Foghorn

PS....these duo-props are on 27' albemarle and have 2400 hours without any problems, til now.

Are you sure? It could be unburnt gas and water from the exhaust. How would water get in the lower unit? Can you see the seal leaking. Fish line? Is it milky? If it's milky oil, that means there is oil and water in the lower unit. Check it out, you might just be getting lucky! I hope.

Mumblerone,

I wish that was the case. 1st it's a jachshaft boat and the exhaust runs straight out through the transom and not through the outdrives. 2nd it is in fact a bit milky althought not as bad as I have seen in some engines. It is however a constant drip so I guess I'll be getting dirty this weekend instead of fishing. Know a good mechanic I can get on very short notice??

Foghorn, If this is a volvo duo prop you are talking about, changing the seals is pretty darned easy. I helped a buddy replace the seals in his DP this past week.Other than the tool to get the prop nuts off with, nothing special was needed. A large philips screwdriver, a set of allen wrenches and it was pretty much a walk in the park. The outer shaft slide off the inner one once you remove the part of the housing which has the seals in it. Then you can replace the smaller, inner shaft seals as well.

Bottomline...good news, I was just hoping Foghorn was going to get a little lucky. That 2400 hours isn't bad for a new seal. Good luck!

I agree! 2400 hours-wow. My friend's volvo munched everything because fishing line managed to get into the seals and thus water. NEWS FLASH-Water is NOT an acceptable lubricant for Volvo Duo Prop outdrives!! Should you need to replace one, be ready to let loose about 6 grand.
