Default 100 Hour Suzuki DF140 maintenance

After reading a THT thread about changing oil in a 4-stroke, I have a few issues I would like others opinions. I have a Suzuki DF140 now out of warranty, so do I take it to the dealer or change the oil myself, here are the issues I know of during the oil change in addition to changing the oil every 100 hours, maybe there are more.

The DF 140 has internal zincs in the water jackets, do you guys change them out yourself, how hard is that?

What about software updates?? Do you guys changing your own oil even think about them? Can a do-it-yourself guy get access to software updates from Suzuki?

Service bulletins, how can you get access to this information on your Suzuki outboard?

I live in SW Florida so lots of shallow water, I like to change out the water pump impeller every year or 100 hours, what about everybody else??

Lubrication, I think there is a special grease that goes in a few of the grease locations on the DF 140 according to my dealer, what is everybody using for this application?

Jim, I can't speak for the zincs (yet). But changing your oil is easy, it is about a 30 minute job the first time and about 15 mins after that. Don't forget your lower unit lube - same story there.

I don't know about the zincs, haven't had to do that. Software updates - would be nice but I've never seen a zuke computer interface available for an end user.

Impeller is the same as any other outboard, just be sure to slather on a good bit of grease on both the prop shaft and also the driveshaft when you slide it back together.

As for special grease, as far as I know if Suzuki makes it you can order it. I don't think any of their lubes are really anything unique, but no reason NOT to use the zuke stuff.

I changed the zincs on my motor. The ones at the voltage regulator. 2 bolts and they came off. There was some salt holding the cover on. I just tapped it lightly and it came off. The new ones just screw on. I reused the gasket and no problems. I also change the fuel filter every year. I have not done the VST filter (I think that's what you call it). I have a racor in the line and then the one under the cowl. My motor is a johnson 140 (same-same). I use the triple guard grease that they put out. It is blue and gooey. I heard it is pretty good.

I have not been back since the 20 hours check up. I don't know if I am ruining my motor or not by not going back. I worry a little about a valve adjustment. I will be getting a manual and doing the water pump this spring.

The oil change, lower unit oil change, and water pump change are all quite easy to do if your so inclined. Will save you a bunch of money to do yourself . The best place I've found for parts, including a service manual is http://www.brownspoint.com/index.htm

If you are not mechanicaly inclined you may want to send it to the service tech. What I did was order the manual and look it over carefully. It all seemed easy enough to me so I've been doing it myself. For the water pump change out, google outboard water pump change (or something similar) and a great thread will come up with pictures and everything. I can't remember which site it was on but it's out there.

Capt Fred:

Yes I am very mechanically inclined and capable. I will order the service manual, did you get any software or interface cable for access to the outboard itself ??

Looks like a good site for parts, maybe I get a computer interface from them also.

Thanks all for the reply's, the oil change is a piece of cake, but other items need attention also and I would encourage all Zuke owners to do as Capt Fred did and review the service manual for your particular engine.

Oil and zinc change is veey easy to do. The water pump is not a problem either. Since you run in shallow water you want to make sure you keep your enigne flushed. There are alot of very small cooling hoses that run all over the engine. These can clog easy. You will need a interface cable along with the software to read the ECU. The ECU on these enignes cannot be updated. You must replace the ECU on these engines.
