95 yamaha 130

I have had this motor since it was new and recently the multi-function guage has gone blank like (losing power to it) and the motor cuts rpms down to about 1000. if given any more gas the motor runs really rough. assume it thinks it is getting no oil and therefore cuts rpms to protect engine. couldn't find a lose connection but there may be one. if i turn off key and restart the guage seems to "reset".
this is on a 17 mako and i fish in places where i really don't want engine problems....any ideas?
