Need advice on fishing boat mfg to rep in san diego
I would greatly appreciate thoughts on the type of trailerable coastline fishing boat and sportfisher that experienced southern Cal. fishing folks feel would meet with success in San Diego. Hull design, flotation features, pilot house cabins, price, quality, model variety and lengths, etc. are all topics that I would like to hear about. Every factory rep. is proud of their line, but I'm interested in the opinions of those that have watched or been in involved in the southern Cal boating market. Is there some manufacturer or boat type from the east that would represent an improvement over the current selection available in the area from San Diego to Newport Beach?
Re: Need advice on fishing boat mfg to rep in san diego
you do not see a ton of CC out here in the N. Cali
our seas never get that calm for them and the weather is usually foggy and cold
but i would still take a 35 contender here

Steiger just signed on a dealer in the SF Bay Area. Boats will be on display at the January show.
I just looked at the Steiger website...they list Boat and Motor Mart as a dealer in SF. The dealer's site says that they sell Parker AND Osprey...nothing about Steiger. Maybe they are going to lose Parker and smartly chose Steiger as a replacement?
Hopefully, Steiger will get a good dealer down south.
Re: Need advice on fishing boat mfg to rep in san diego
Steigercraft sure makes fine looking boats. They seem a bit on the heavy side for their size, but seem well powered to compensate and that could be a good thing, especially here in SoCal when the wind turns offshore.
Personally, I've always been partial to the Cuddy types, a small cabin w/head has always been appreciated on weekenders to the local islands and a closed bow seems to stay drier in the snotty afternoon Channel crossing.
Most SoCal fishermen I know prefer a boat that can get them to the 'fishing grounds' both inshore and offshore, quickly. Fuel consumption is rarely an issue (even at current costs), but a trailerable boat is more desirable because of lack of slip spaces available, and weight could be an issue. (There's ALWAYS a 'trade-off, I guess).
Steigercraft sure looks like a nice ride, though.

RE: Need advice on fishing boat mfg to rep in san diego
I live in San Diego and just moved up from a 21' Bayrunner to a Pacific 26ST. I spent a lot of time looking for the "perfect" San Diego boat. First of all, you need to determine your 80/20 rule for type of fishing. Out of San Diego the trips range from 2 to 6 miles out to the kelp beds, 15 to 20 mile for the Coronado Islands in mexican waters and/or 25 to 65+ miles for off shore.
Basically, if you are not planning a lot of offshore trips a 21' to 23' CC is perfect. You will have range, room for a bait tank (a must for SD waters) and enough boat to get back in good shape if the weather changes. You will still have enough boat for long trips when the weather is favorable.
If you are planning more offshore trips a 26' is a good choice. I prefer a CC since I like to be able to work fish around the boat as well as spread the fisherman around. You can still get a decent amount of deck space with a smaller cabin (Parkers are very popular around here). I would look at the Pacific as it is tough, handles big water well, is economical and is easy to trailer and store. My experience with the thinner hulled boats like Valco and Klamath was not great as the hulls are too thin to take long term pounding.
Drop me a PM or an e-mail if you want to see my Pacific or chat.

Haven't heard if they are dropping a line to pick up the Steiger's. They've only been a Parker dealer for a couple of years. I know that they have sold at least a few of them, since I've seen them recently on the water. We didn't have a Parker dealer prior to them picking up the line.
B&MM was an Osprey dealer for quite some time before Osprey went belly-up.
And yeah, they are a little slow in their website updating. As other dealers are too.
Maybe they want to "surprise" folks (or other dealers) at the upcoming boat show with the Steiger's...

Re: Need advice on fishing boat mfg to rep in san diego
New Contender dealer just opened up here in Newport Beach. The owners are well financed, and are sponsoring some of the bigger local marlin tournaments. They are also showing some success against some of traditional So Cal marlin teams.
My money would be on bringing more of these type of boats to So Cal, as opposed to bringing more of what's already here. With fuel costs skyrocketing, and marine diesel costing almost as much as gas, it's high time for a fresh look at what type of boat is best for these waters.
Re: Need advice on fishing boat mfg to rep in san diego
I apologize for not knowing the protocol on chat sites. Old dogs and new technology take a minute longer.
Thank you all for your input. I hope to get alot more.
The bulk of registrations for the last few years show that Seaswirl, Parker, and Triumph were the top selling brands. Two offer pilot houses, and the 3rd an indestructable hull. Other great brands don't seem to get much traction, which might be due to the boat's features, price, fit and finish or maybe the dealer(or lack of) is the issue.
I don't know if my observation is correct in that many of the coastal boat manufacturers are located in the southeast and their products are photographed in the warm, tropical climate unique to them. Southern California has beautiful weather, but it does have different characteristics. A number of manufacturers that have started to contact me all have wonderful cc's, wa's, and expresses, but only a few have pilot houses - which seem to be the common success denominator. I realize that a pilot house isn't for everyone, but it is starting to look like it should be in the lineup for the winning manufacturer.
I'm a little surprised that no one has brought up the issue of the sealed foam hulls that prevent the boat from sinking. Five manufacturers produce that type of boat and they are barely on the radar out here. No demand for them ?
Please keep giving me your input. I'm looking at all of your brands and listening to your comments on how you use your boats. Please include the issues that disappoint you about your boat.
Thanks again, Pappy

If someone else is dropping Parker, I say pick them up.
How about Skagit Orca?
Skagits are awesome from what I have seen. The thing with Parker is that they like to limit the dealer competition. I don't blame them really...just not good for the consumer.
Down here in SoCal, they pulled the dealership from Johnson marine so that Sundance would be the only dealer in the bottom of the state. Needless to say prices went up with no other local choices for the consumer of that type of boat in that general price range...However, Defiance is now starting to come on strong as an alternative. Steigercraft would be a great Pacific boat. The more options, the better for the boat buying public.

I know that you are in sales, and you will be trying to sell something, but I'd recommend not using the term "indestructable hull" when referring to triumph's.
