Default How far to the stream?

Some one asked me at a party the other day and I realized I did not know north of Lauderdale exactly. How far to the stream from:
Jupiter
Daytona
Jacksonville
Charleston
Hatteras
Jersey shore
NE

Generally 70 mi or so to the closest canyon (100 fathom drop) from most ports in NE. The stream can be anywhere from 15 to 75 miles past that. We usually dont go to the stream up here but look for filaments of water that spin off and butt up to the 100 fathom curve, so running to the stream is unusual. (thankfully) The inherent structure and upwellings of water on the edge hold masses of bait (and pelagic fish) on its own merit. However, when gulf stream eddy interaction is present conditions become optimal and life typically becomes focused and intense in a relatively small area.

NC is tricky in distance to the stream, Hatteras and Oregon Inlet are relativley close, where as the southern parts of the states such as Wrightsville beach or Ocean Isle have much longer runs, 60-70 miles. From Topsail Island my regular run is about 60-70 miles.

You can run south out of Jacksonville and it's about 50. Straight out about 65, and north, well a long dang way. Yep, I miss the keys. Not to mention in Jacksonville, sometimes 15 miles once you hit the inlet to da house.

Charleston is about 57 miles to the ledge running straight out. Specific fishing spots are north and south and can be 65-70 miles.

A friend once told me roughly 80-miles off Manasquan Inlet, NJ.

Dumb question, but... If I had a boat capable of going 80 miles off, and did so in the middle of January or February, would the air temperatures be significantly warmer out there?

Sorry misread - your post - for other areas - you can tell from SST charts. I like the one from Rutgers Univ. It is call the Coll Room and it is free. I will try to post an example

Here is the SST for the NE - The Gulf Stream is clearly evident by the dark orange. You scan see it close to the outer banks and then the curve to the NE

here is some more for mid-florida coast

GULF STREAM HAZARDS
NONE.

THE APPROXIMATE LOCATION OF THE WEST WALL OF THE GULF STREAM BASED
ON SATELLITE IMAGERY AS OF SATURDAY NOV 24 AT 1 AM...

41 NAUTICAL MILES EAST OF PONCE INLET.
30 NAUTICAL MILES EAST OF PORT CANAVERAL.
24 NAUTICAL MILES EAST OF SEBASTIAN INLET.
14 NAUTICAL MILES EAST OF FORT PIERCE INLET.

They get the info from the SST satellite overheads (like the one from The Cool Room) You can get them for the entire Coast from NOAA's site. The closeness of the Stream really changes depending on time of year.

Glen

It also varies a great deal, at least in some areas. I am most familiar with the area from Miami to Key West. Here (from the National Data Buoy Center) is the 11/23 forecast for GS distances:
THE APPROXIMATE EDGE OF THE GULF STREAM...AS OF NOVEMBER 23...

35 NAUTICAL MILES SOUTH OF DRY TORTUGAS.
35 NAUTICAL MILES SOUTH OF MARQUESAS KEYS.
35 NAUTICAL MILES SOUTH OF KEY WEST.
38 NAUTICAL MILES SOUTH OF BIG PINE KEY.
35 NAUTICAL MILES SOUTH OF MARATHON.
30 NAUTICAL MILES SOUTHEAST OF CRAIG KEY.
18 NAUTICAL MILES SOUTHEAST OF KEY LARGO.
14 NAUTICAL MILES EAST OF OCEAN REEF.

GULF STREAM INFORMATION COURTESY OF THE NAVAL OCEANOGRAPHIC OFFICE.

Note the Marathon, Big Pine and Key West distances. Often, these will be as little as 12, 8 and 20 or so. It depends on time of year, climate pattern in force, etc., etc. I am told that further north (Carolinas north) the distances are, comparatively, more stable, but I do not know that for a fact.

If you Google, there are a bunch of good websites with this info. Steve mentioned one, and another is oceanpro.com

At 80 miles in savannah, you just get into 200 feet.

When I boot up the GPS at the dock and enter my gulf stream waypoint.....it says I only have 92 miles to go.......2 to 2 1/2 hours later we are putting out our spread.
