"Sheets in the wind" ie: 1 / 2 / or 3 Sheets in the Wind. Referes to the lines used to manage the sails. 1 sheet, you still had some control... 3 sheets, well...it was a rocky, out of control night.
Then a good one for those in Hurricane areas... With an approaching storm, face directly into the wind, the "eye" of the storm will be 112 degrees over your right shoulder (northern hemisphere).
And the sailors' say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl, what a good wife you would be..."
For weather:
Red sky at night, sailors' delight. Red sky in morning, sailors' take warning.
Never pee into the wind.
Any port in a storm.

Sucks gas and hauls ass!
One step ahead and you are a genius, two steps ahead and you are a misfit.
By and Large, now used to mean "generally speaking" or "for the most part" refers to sailing by the wind with all canvas pulling. Also phrased as "Full and by"
When you tell someone to "Pipe Down" it means they should roll up their hammocks.
If "the cat's out of the bag" then the Bos'n's Mate has pulled the Cat o' Nine Tails out of it's canvas bag in preparation for a flogging. All hands to witness punishment!

"I'd rather be on my boat with a drink on the rocks than in the drink with my boat on the rocks."
"A collision at sea can ruin your day."
On a more serious note, these are from my OOD letter signed many years ago:
"No matter how important a man at sea may consider himself, unless he is fundamentally worthy, the sea will some day find him out. If a wrong move is made at sea, in a critical moment, death may be the penalty for the most simple failure - not only death to one but to many. Incompetence may prevail upon the shore, but at sea it sooner or later is ruthlessly uncovered and utter disaster often follows in it's wake."
"If there is any question when an officer should be ruthless in his requirements of instant obedience and attention to duty, it is as Officer of the Deck."
"Nothing is more dangerous than the seaman to be grudging in taking precations lest they turn out to have been unnecessary."
"The Officer of the Deck is his own best lookout."
