Random Quote: Dad, is there a depth finder on this boat? Why is the water tan?
Have run into a problem shipping a bimini top via Fed Ex Ground and UPS and looking for any ideas besides freight shipment. Dimensions are 63 inches by 53 inches by 7 inches with a weight of 24 lbs. Any guru's out there? Do Bimini's come apart typically under the canvas? It is a factory setup from Sea Hunt.
For the size, freight is about it. You'll want to pick the freight class carefully. Rates are a function of the class and can double or triple if the wrong class is specified. You'll need to talk to the shipper about what class it is. It should come in at a class under 100 because it is not excessively prone to damage.

You are correct. For factory biminis freight is the only option.
Several things you can do. First do you have any friends that ship truck frieght on a regular basis if you do have them ship it for you they will get a much better rate. Second you could cut the frame and fit it with plugs that can then be rivited in place when you put the top back together. Third check with Greyhound I have used them for weird sizes and heavy items. The first option is the best one. Brian
I looked in the freight classification book for bimini tops and they are not listed. As I noted before shipping classifications are strange and can really up the cost.
You should probably ship it as "Boat Rigging, Not Otherwise Indicated" under item number 25140 which is class 85. Class 85 will get you a decent rate.
The ratings cover some very strange things. There's a class for Steering wheel gears in burlaped bundles and vessel navigation logs in boxes, but none for bimini tops.
Thanks for the input guys. THT is on the ball as further investigation this morning indicates exactly what ya'll have said. I have one friend efforting with regular UPS to see what he can do and another option of shipping through a regular freight customer if needed. Kerno, I will write down the numbers you gave for the class and appreciate you taking that time. Thanks again, Mark
I faced this last year shipping from Fla to NY and as stated above freight was the only recourse. Shipping from business to business is far cheaper than having a residential location as either the sender or receiver.
Where is this going? Back to the factory? I am going to be at shop road this week and then in Charlotte on Sat evening. Returning to Charlotte airport on Tuesday then back to shop road.
If you need someone to take it back and forth from the factory my schedule looks pretty good; got to go that way anyway.
I might get flamed for this, but I have used Freight Quote a few times and they have not let me down and the shipping prices are discounted. www.freightquote.com. Get the phone number off the site and just call them. Have the weight and the measurements too. If you can find a pallet or crate it that would bebetter and probably safer. They can figure the freight class.
Make sure you do not skimp on the dimensions. They will nail you big time $$ wise if you "guess" wrong. Other then that....I have had no problems with them.
