Default 29' DYER

I'm in the market for a new"used boat" and I'm looking at the 29' Dyer. Any comments on this boat, in the chop, following seas, if they are well built etc. Would you buy one??
Thanks in advance

A classic New England boat that's built well and handles big seas and is easy on fuel.

But don't be a hurry - it's not fast.

My friend has one that I have fished on many times. They are outstanding boats. He has a 350 Crusader gas and cruises just under 20 sipping fuel. They are excellent on the drift as well, very stable.

His is for sale and priced VERY right as he just moved into a 34' Wilbur. If you are interested in the bargain of the century for a Dyer 29', let me know and I'll give you his number.

Which model? The newer 29's are slick, fast and well-done. Older ones are slow, tubby and well-done. Diff't animals...

There is no significant change to the Dyer 29 hull that I know of. I was just at the shop a week ago and a brand new one looks just like a 30 year old one to me below the gunnels. The new ones do look more sexy above the gunnel cap and there are some more modern, classy touches but the hull is the hull.

Dyers are great boats! First ride i ever had in a "downeaster". Was impressed with how soft the ride in a 4 ft head sea was. I can remeber the squishing sound, a slight hesitation then the spray hitting the windows. I was all smiles as a 20 year old kid used to 20 ft out board powered center consoles. Take a good look at the boat you have in mind, most had gas engines in them. They are fairly narrow boats for thier lenght. Good luck!

Am scouting with a friend for one for him. They are beautiful boats but as mentioned some of the older ones with smaller Perkins are pretty slow as in 10 knot slow. Several around have been re-powered with Yanmars giving them reasonable speeds of 14-17 knot cruise. I had heard that they were considering putting hard chines on the newer boats compared to the rounded chines on the old boats but so not know if this is true so may be worth looking into.
The photo abve is a beautiful soft top dyer moored near me in Dartmouth - she is a real beauty.
Good luck

There was one sitting at Nauset Marine In Marion. It had been on the lot for over a year. I have no personal knowledge of the boat just thought I would pass this along.

Very small boat for it's size. It is not a true 29 and it is very narrow. The boats ride great at any speed but tend to be wet until you get above 18kts. It has a snappy roll on the drift due to the narrow beam.
I have 2 friends with Dyers one with twin 350's I believe the only one ever made and it goes great at 24kts the other with a single 350 which goes nice at about 17-18 kts and easy on the fuel. It is just a very small boat.

Great in a head seas. Steering can be quite a handful downsea when a real planing hull would have much more lift. You get a lot of spray on the windshield and aft unprotected cockpit but that big vertical windshield is terrific. Wish a lot more boats had that.
Narrow beam to length gives good economy. The roll isn't too snappy because of it's substantial keel. Good trolling boat, bass or tuna with no planing "hump" to get over so most any speed is OK.
Lot of configurations: trunk cabin or flush deck, bass boat or hardtop , enginebox/seat or flush sole, gas or diesel. with the above-mentioned 17-18 kts typical cruise. One of the ones I used to fish on had a marlin tower and maybe 10' pulpit for a long time.
Nice boats that keep their value suprisingly well. Not picnique fancy at all, more downeast Spartan & classic old-style hardy.
The transom tiller & cockpit controls are good handy options.

Blitzen- twin 350's .. that's interesting! Can't imagine fitting them in , but it would be fun trying to go 24 kts in a Dyer , upsea.
