I repowered my 21 footer custom aluminuim hull with the new MercCruiser stern Drive Diesel D1.7 DTI and was wondering if anyone else has any experience with this package.
I increased my speed by 10 knts. cut my fuel in half and doubled my range.
Throttle response is awesome espeacialy on a dead take off.

What engine did you replace? Smallblock gasser? That new line of diesel Mercruisers is kind of interesting. I believe the 1.7 engine is a Japanese product. The bigger one is based on a proven (can you believe it) Italian engine.
We sell this package in a 20' Trophy Walkaround. It is a great power package and well worth the extra cost. The diesel gives the Trophy about 36+ mph top speed and over 400 miles range.
Heard good things about their reliability, high hours without failure. I was told by a boat builder that these engines have been around for a while in other applications. Before anyone jumps on me, I know that this application may not yield the same results. I could not find a bad word about them anywhere. Hope they work out for you.
In other words how many hours do they last ?
I'm having a debate with a guy who claims he knows for sure smaller diesels last 800 hrs. max.
I told him that was wrong, more like 2500 average.

Chaps,
The total package including instalation was around $14,000.
And I am only going to get 600 hrs. Come on who is kidding who.
I have 200 hrs. on her just last season and the thing is still breaking in.
Change oil, good FW flush hey i'll bet 2500 hrs. or pluss.

Just to through in my 2cents. ProSports 28 foot ProKat is offered with twin D1.7 DTIs ... I know that at least two of these are being used as "6pack" charter boats out of So-Cal. They are relatively new ... but they are racking up the hours pretty fast.
I talked to CabaKat marine and was told they are not haveing problems with them. It will be interesting to see these boats next year when they start to push 2000 hours.
Sport-Craft boats' 27 foot Cat walkaround was tested with new Cummins diesels in the March 2002 Sportsfishing Mag. Article is on page 110; also Mercruiser who teamed up with Cummins runs an add on these new engines on page 35. List price as tested was $81,750. Boat as tested got a combined burn rate of 7+ gph at 27 mph, 8+ gph at 30 mph and 9+ gph at 33 mph. Those numbers make the 120 hp diesels pay for themselves. By the way the price is the same as with the 200 hp Mercury Optimax's. The only complaint was very noticeable vibration at trolling speed. I'm sure with the right engine isolation mounting this will be corrected.
These turbocharged aftercooled engines are built by Cummins, not Isuzu. Has anybody seen anything else about these engines? How does this performance match up with the Izusu's?
My understanding of the origins of the new Merc I/O diesels are: 1.7 Isuzu/Poland, 4.2 VM/Italy, 7.3 IH/USA (same block as Ford Powerstroke) . . . someone correct me if I'm wrong. These aren't the Cummins/Merc packages. VM is owned by Penske (Detroit Diesel)
Chaps,
You are right on the money when my 1.7 arrived the crate was marked made in Japan assembled in Poland and Isuzu.
220 hrs. and still running like a champ.
