Default Boat Insurance. What is wrong??!!

Good day!

I purchased recently 1987 Chris Craft 33'. When I tried to shop for insurance, I was puzzled with the results. 5 companies (including insurance monster GEICO) said, that they cannot provide a quote, as their quotes will not be competetive for THIS PARTICULAR boat manufacturer - Chris Craft.!!

Do you know anything about this? If somebody can help to find good insurance company with good rates, which is not afraid to deal with Chris Craft boats? The boat is located in Hollywood, FL.

Thanking you in advance.

From other post her about boat ins. after you get over 30' they get tough to insure in FL. I'm sure a few here will post who they went with but from what I have read for boats over 30' ins. gets $.

You might want to contact a Chris Craft dealer. Maybe they can point you in the right direction.

Two things to consider:
1. It doesn't have so much to do with the manufacturer, but with the vintage of the boat. That is a 20+ year old boat and the insurance company will look at it as a large risk and liability, therefore the rates will not be aggressive.
2. Nobody that I have dealt with in quite some time has been as competitive as Progressive. I have no relation to the company, but they've really been at the top in marine insurance. Just my opinion.

I live in Hollywood FL and I have my 30' Scarab insured with State Farm. Though I have had it insured with them since 2002, if I were to try to insure it now things would be different due to its age, size, HP and high theft risk due to our recent smuggling explosion.

A couple of questions. Will you be keeping the boat in FL or bringing it to Maryland? Also....what kind of insurance are you looking for? Replacement insurance will be tough to get on such an old boat unless there are recipts and pictures that proove its worth money. But you should be able to get liability insurance.

As stated, two things are going to kill you.Age of the boat. You will need a full survey.Second is all boats that are kept in the water along the gulf coast in the south cost a ton of money to insure.Check your home insurance company to add the boat to it,but be ready to pay thru the nose!

If it's in the water at a marina, $50,000 in general liability may not be enough. Most major marinas require at least $300,000.

Make sure you get all the information correct to them; otherwise, they'll look for an out if you have a claim.

You definitely need more liability coverage. Let's say your boat catches fire and in turn burns up or damages several other vessels. You'll have a real problem on your hands... like becoming homeless because of having to sell your house to pay off the lawsuits. If anything, make sure you have an umbrella liability policy. This can often be added to your homeowners policy. This will help as a 'backstop' against claims that exceed your boat policy.
