Default Saddle Time---Time to sell?

WE all love boating...

most of us work very hard to be able to afford the boat, insurance, gas, bait, etc etc etc....

at what point must you sell your boat from lack of activity?

work, family, money gets in the way...

If you might have to leave the state, can only boat on long weekends/holidays a couple times a year.... have to fly down, clean, hope everything works, etc...

at what point do you sell? 4x a year? people say if your not running the boat, things will break. just like everything else, it must be ran...

anybody have experience with getting everything set up and then you don't have the time/money to use and enjoy your boat?

What's that old proverb... we work to make money, with money we buy things, they sit around because we are too busy working to enjoy them...

I'm depressed knowing I won't be able to run/clean/baby the boat on a bi-monthly basis... might have to let it sit for months upon a time while i pay the payments, insurance, etc.....

That would be a tough call.

Do you use your boat for pleasure or mostly fishing?

If it's fishing I would do the math.

You might find that it's cheaper to charter a boat a few times a year rather than make payments on the one you have.
Plus, maintainence, bait, fuel, ect.

If you just use it for pleasure cruises that be an even tougher call. I'd base it on disposable income. Are you hurting finacially?

I did not get a chance to use my boat that much this season. I would never get rid of it. I enjoy it to much when
I do get to use it. My situation might be a little different because my boat is payed for.

Tough call.

How about selling what you have and buying something that can be used in local rivers/lakes as well as the occasional jaunt to the coast.

its not soo much the financials... its just the thought of continuously paying for it and not getting that much use out of it.

well i fish, cruise, sightsee, go to eat, go shelling.... things that a charter boat are probably not suited for....

i just hate the concept of work work work to make money, you buy things.... then you can't use them because your too busy working!!!

I would have to say that for me, although I had about 170 hrs. this season, I think if I had as few as 10 hours I wouldn't sell it....its the whole lifestyle that goes along with the boat. I feel great on the water, and mentally rested after a nice weekend, day, or afternoon on my boat. If you like it, keep it....let it sit on a trailer if possible, this way you don't have the slip fees. Another option is to Co-op with someone that you know, and let the boat get used in exchange for cash, supplies or what have you.

At 4x a year you would do better to charter. You get a bigger boat, a captain to do the hard work, a captain's crew to do clean up and you don't have to worry about repairs, maintenance and ethanol..

I average 300 hrs/yr. But it sits in my backyard on a lift.

This is why all of us in the South are soooo lucky... I use my boat for fishing, swimming, going to the restuarant, riding etc. We boat a lot from Marcxh thru Nov. I then fish offshore weather permitting in the Winter...

You could wait, keep it for another year and see if things settle down for you. But then you'd lose some value for another calendar year. On the other hand depending on how much you get for the boat you could put the money to work and you can pan your next purchase some time down the road. If you defineitly think it wil sit too much; put it up for sale. At least you are in a good position where it is not killing you financially and you can take offers. You can always decide not to take them in the end.

Ahhhh the quintessential boating dilema......

Ask yourself this, "Would I have more money in my savings accounts after 2 years of not boating compared to if I still owned the boat?"

The answer to this question is suprisingly NO.

Basically most of us will find other ways to piss the money away, if its not boating its something else. Dont ask me how I know.

Dont fret, even the most avid boaters think about this from time to time.

One of the biggest problems I see in boating is that there are too many owners and not enough crew. There are many people who would or could be more involved in boating but maybe they can't afford what they want or they simply wouldn't be able to use it enough to justify it. I see my crew as very important, not someone low on the totem pole. For those who have good friends who are good crew, you know how important they are.

In the past, I have been lucky enough to fish with friends on larger boats and I have really appreciated it. Now, I have a larger boat and nothing would make me happier than to fish with the same 8-10 guys rotating on the boat because everyone becomes an integral part, learns the boat and the tackle, etc.

But, we all have egos to some extent and that ego may not allow us to be anything other than a captain. What does this have to do with the original post? Well, if you are questioning whether you should continue as an owner, it is probably time to sell. But if you want to continue boating or fishing, seek out friends and build relationships that allow you to go on their boats and become an integral part of that crew. Good luck, hope you stay on the water one way or another.

littletunny - that picture say it all. I can't imagine ever being boatless. For those of you that didn't catch it. It is the tippie toe effort to get above the gunnel.

As long are you are not going broke in order to keep the boat. Just keep it. Even if you only use it twice a month. It is worth it. On months where you can't make use of it. Loan it out to a trust worthy friend.
