Default Donating a boat - please help

I posted this on the Chesapeake board but thought I might get a few ideas here:

I am looking for a 501C to donate our family boat. She's been a good boat for over 20 years. Recently I ran out of gas and there was some kind of trickle down effect of bad luck. After replacing the fuel pump, which I thought was bad and replacing the filters, oil, plugs I noticed that I was getting water in the #4 cylinder. I could be as simple as the riser gasket (which was the problem before) or, I could have a cracked head. Regardless, the boat is going to charity. Does anyone know of a charity that will take this boat? It runs good (doesn't idle well - because of the water in the #4 cylinder). I did run the boat the 2 miles to Kent Narrows and put her back on the trailer. Please help.

When I lived on Cape Cod, I called up the local Sea Scouts. They came out and picked up the boat and were very generous on the value as a charitable contribution. That was some years ago, but its worth a phone call.

I noticed a sign in Morehead City, NC for this place. It looks like it would be worth looking into: http://www.carteret.edu/boatprogram.htm

You do realize that the tax write off you get on this is limited to whatever amount of money the charity gets for it on the open market. Meaning, if the charity sells it for, let's say, $3000, that's what you can claim. Then if your tax bracket is, let's say, 20%, you can only write off $600.
It's not like the old days where a charity would give you a slip of paper that says the value is much higher than it really is.
I'm not trying to keep you from giving your boat away to a good charity, but even if you sell it for a song, it will be a lot more than the tax write off you will get.

Try the Salvation Army. Our local store does a brisk business in cars and boats.
