I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF ANYONE HAS ANY INFO ON THE NEW PROJECT X 4 STROKE MERC, I AM ATTENDING THE MIAMI BOAT SHOW AND PLAN ON MAKING MY DECISION ON MY MOTORS FOR MY 31 OPEN SEAVEE I HAVE ON ORDER THAT IS GOING TO BE READY IN MAY 04, I ORDERED THE BOAT AT THE FT. LAUDERDALE BOAT SHOW, AFTER VISITING THE SEAVEE FACTORY ONCE I DECIDED ON THE NEW HARD TOP, ANY INFO OR ADVICE IS APPRECIATED
On www.mercurymarine.com there are links for the new projectx 4 strokes. Techincal info is there, albeit wrapped in propaganda. Is Seavee owned by Brunswick?
Reason I ask is that I believe the engines will be first available on Brunswick boats first (ie limited supply of them...if people really are hot for these motors, then make em buy a brunswick boat). I am not sure they will be available as an option aside as a pre-rig on a brunswick boat beofre late summer 2004. But I could be wrong
NantucketSal, I heard the same thing ( Project X only on Brunswick boats ), but I heard that deliveries will start in late spring of 2004.
Anyone wanting to repower with one of these will have a long wait and better have deep pockets. The engine uses a new propietary hydraulic steering system and new "drive and shift by wire" controls. I don't expect that these extra parts will be available until 2005.
I don't know how a superchanger will hold up in the saltwater environment. also the project \"X\" is is a in-line 6 how do you think that the engine(s) will sit on the transom of the boat. Euro style (like Sea Vee) and bracket boats on adverage have a 32\" clearance for a 30\" high v-6 outboard when tilled up. The merc protect \"X\" has to taller do to the fact of the in-line 6 config. just a few things to think about.
take a look at the posting below about Suzuki's 250 4 banger. they have been very impressive.
herefishyfishy posted this
\"I was fortunate enough today to sea trial a 340B with twin Suzuki 4 stroke 250's. There were four of in the boat with 100 gal fuel. In the ditch we hit a touch over 50mph at 6000rpm. I took the ride for two reasons. 1. I was very interested in the new Suzuki engines. 2. I had the itch to look into moving into the 34 from the 31 I already have on order. As for the engines, They were awesome. Very quiet and extremely responsive. The pushed the 34 along effortlessly. There was no fuel management on the boat but from what I am hearing, the Suzuki 250's are getting better fuel economy than the Yamaha F225's.
As for the 34 compared to the 31. I was impressed with the ride of the 34 but I think that the 31 is a much smoother boat. We ran out Lake Worth inlet today to a 4 ft ground swell. The boat performed great, but comparing it to the deeper V 31 I thought the 34 was a little more bumpy.
The ride today pretty much put my mind at ease to stick with the 31 but now I really want those Suzuki 250's on the back. I think the 31 could easily be a 58-60mph boat with those engines.
If you ever get a chance, check out the torque curve for the Suzuki's compared to the Yamaha's, the Suzuki's have much better use of HP.\"

\"I helped my buddy Bill take delivery of his new Seavee yesterday. A 34'Cuddy.
With 300hpdi's it hit 50 mph at 5100 rpm. Pretty light load on it though.\"
the twin 250 suzuki's got up to 50 mph+ and they have 100 few ponys. Hmmm make you think?
this was wrighten by wylie (owner of yellowfin boats)
\"Sorry for not getting back on the specs, we have a pair of 250's on our yellowfin 31 that was used at the suzuki press release.
we saw 58.8 consistently and 61mph in the right conditions with there propellers which are 16 inch diameter. there props would not carry the bow the way i wanted so i put on a set of my props and lost nothing out of the hole saw the same top end but was turning 6800 rpms which is 600 over the rev limiter, we have ordered in some 25 and 27 pitcth props that should be hear next week. i will keep you guys posted. compared to the yamaha f225, its about 5 mph faster on the top, but the big difference is out of the hole. feels like a 2 stroke.I cannot even begin to tell you how impressed i am with them.
scrap all your thinking on the 300 hpdis the suzuki 4 bangers are unbelievable, as much low end torque as a 250 opti and pulls all the way through to 6000 rpms, they make the yam 4 strokes kind of look silly. by far the most impressive outboard i have run outside of the 300 x pro max.
36YF with twins Suzuki 250s. The boat had plenty of hole shot as the 36 got right up on plane. Cruise was 37mph at 24gph with 4guys, light fuel and good weather. \"when we got the new props in the boat ran 55 mph top end cruise 40 at 4400 rpms burning 24 gph per hr . thats with 23\" suzuki props. got on plane in 1 1/2 bot lengths. 120 gal. of gas and 3 people. the 21\" props had almost the same performance 54 top end 40 at 4500 rpms 24 gal/hr.\"
That says alot about Suzuki motors, are very efficient and power full.\"
Here are the speed and fuel flo figures on the pair of new Suzy 250's on Wylie's 31 Yellowfin:
RPM -Speed - Fuel burn(gph/2 engines)
idle --- 3.3 ------ 1.4
1000 - 5.5 ------ 1.6
1500 - 7.7 ------ 4.0
2000 - 8.6 ------ 6.8
2500 - 9.7 ----- 10.4
3000 - 25.0 --- 12.4
3500 - 32.0 --- 15.6
4000 - 37.1 --- 21.2
4500 - 42.2 --- 25.0
5000 - 47.1 --- 29.2
5500 - 50.9 --- 35.4
6000 - 58.1 --- 42.0
As a comparison 27 Contender with 2-250hp Yamaha OX66's doing 3500 rpms goes 30mph while burning 20 gph - that's 30% more fuel than the Suzy's burned on a larger 31 Yellowfin going 2 mph faster!
some reason to choice
1) 25 more hp at the same weight (580#)as yammies 225 4's
2) DOHC 24-valve Engine with Variable Valve Timing System that means the best low and mid range torge accelation for a 4 banger.
3)swing the largest prop on the any outboard which also helps with low and mid range torge accelation
4)55 degree block the more space on the transom
5)3 yr warranty plus free 3 yr extended warranty for 6 yrs total. if you live in the state of florida suzuki doesn't offer the free extended warrant but you get $600 rebate that can be used to purchase the extend warranty

Hey Flats, did you read the Question?
if you would read the into paragraph to my posting you would see there is info on the Project "X". if merc would actually produce #'s for the project "X" then people can can an idea of want they are getting. The Miami Int'l Boat is two weeks away and merc has not produce a factual performance #'s. Do not you think you would get a lot more responce to the motor to release spec's and performance #'s two weeks before the boats show. Or is it they "merc" scared the the Projct "X" is going to be the next black anchor in a long history of bring out engines bofore they are ready.

my posting are all factually base with performace #'s and opinions of people who are in the boating industry or have run the suzuki 4 bangers. Can you explain how the same boat w/ 100 more hp run at the same top end speed as the boat w/ the suzy? Can you explain how a 36' contender w/ triples 250's top end is 58-60 mphs and the yellowfin w/ twin 250 suzy top end 54-55 mph's? they both have the same weight. So you buy $15,000 and have 250 extra hp's only get you 4-5 more mph's and you have to feed that third engine also. Please enlighten me. I only been running boats for 23 yrs and 16 yrs or thus I have been running suzy, without one problem. I ahve a 250 efi yammie on my Bluewater but the only reason is the i got a great deal on it and it was used. I'm going to run that thru the summer and repower with the suzy 250. Yes i've run omc, merc, and yammie also.
in order of the fewest problems of engines that i have run.
1)suzuki "none"
2)yamaha
3)omc
4)merc
I have not run the new bomb's or honda's so i can talked about them.

but, this thread asked about a merc engine, not a suzuki!
Considering word on Project X came out just a few months ago, I can't think of a better place than the Miami Show to unveil the newest addition to the Black family. Other than the Annapolis Show! On Feb. 12 we will all see what is in store.

I can. Different props. And yes, this thread was about Mercs.
When all you have in life is a hammer, treat everything like a nail.
like i said, I did talk about merc in my opening paragraph. "Machodog" also ask for info the 31' sea vee. It also says that he has not made up his mind on the power for the 31'. if you read there is info about the 31 and 34 sea vee. I aslo show performance #'s to a very similar 31' boat(yellowfin) and compare it to a contender 27 that is also very similar to the 31' sea vee. The only why to make the right decision is to have facts and facts are proven by #'s. I am offering facts so machodog get make an intellagent decision. The only person here on this posting that has show proof(fact) of the performance has been me. Everyone else is talking out of there A$$es cuase it is all speculation. Because Merc. has not produced #'s or spec's. So I think I've anwser all of your questions.
This engine will be the ultimate outboard ever constructed. Everything is top secret and hush hush so the unveiling will be spectacular. Mercury has been testing this engine for 2 years, tested it for over 25000 hours, and tested them in every conceivable environmennt and situation. Millions have been spent to ensure that it is absolutely perfect when it comes out, no more OptiMax fiascos for Merc, the sky's the limit and they'r eheading for it at wide open throttle!
