The Duramax is more advanced technology and with it, you can opt for the Allison transmission which is the absolute best tranny you can buy in a stock pickup from ANYBODY.

I've had a great experience with our 2002 Chevy Duramax with the Allison tranny. Bought it to pull an aluminum three horse trailer full of the wife's nags (10k pounds) and couldn't be happier. I've always been partial to Chevy's but never thought I'd own a diesel due to the noise. The Duramax was a pleasant surprise. Very quiet and the turbo makes it a blast to drive. I pulled a 7000 pound fifth wheel travel trailer across Eastern Oregon and Idaho this summer (plenty of hills) and got 12.5 mpg running at 75 mph. Never once have not had enough power when towing. The crew cab makes it great for hauling kids, friends etc. I think it will haul my new Seaswirl 2101 DC with ease, assuming my wife lets me use it. At the time I thought teaching her to pull her own horses and trailer was a good thing.

My opinion:
The Cummins is the best engine.

The Ford is the best chassis.

The Chevy is the best package.

Anyone have some miles on these babies, I don't mean 20,000?

J.B. What would you pick? best package?

The newness of the GMC isuzu venture concerns me from a mechanical point of view.

Dodges have electrical/ tranny problems.

Fords, well, product consistency seems to lacking.

I am impressed by the GMC responses.

How is the maintenence on these bad boys?

Thanks for the reply's.

The Duramax is made in Japan by Isuzu and thay have a long history with reliable diesel engines including for the U. S. military.

It will be interesting to see how well the new powerstrokes hold up over time. Decreasing it from 7.4 liter to 6.0 liter and increasing horse power. It is a shame they had to screw with sucess for emissions.

have a y2k f350 super cab. only 50000 miles but all trouble free. w/o load get about 19-21 mpg @ around 1700 rpms and 60 mph. carry a slide in, pull the boat, and fish the surf, truck never complains just says "thank you sir can i have some more".

Being in the lumber business, this is the type of truck we have in our yards for small orders and also as salesmen's trucks. We order new trucks every year and rotate the trade in. I now have 12 fords and 16 Chevys. The Chevy is the truck of choice. It rides much better and has more room in the cab (crew cabs) The ground clearence is the same but the Ford cab is 7" higher off the ground. The fuel mileage for the deisels are about the same 15-18 average. The maintenence on the Chevy has been far less. The Fords eat brakes and tires. We are getting about 30k out of a set of tires for the Ford and 45-50k from the Chevy. Also on a comfort note, the Chevy engine is 1/2 as loud compared to the Ford.
