Default Ideas / methods for mounting GPS/fish finder in JON boat.

Rigging up a new 14/48 PolarKraft Jon boat for some fishing and duck hunting duties. Looking for some good ideas on how to mount a depth finder / gps combo unit (looking at a Hummingbird 383C) in this type of boat. The GPS ant. is internal so do I have to mount the GPS w/ screen facing the stern?? Not sure how the GPS orients itself in different mounting configurations? How does a gps know which end is the bow and which end is the stern? Dumb questions Im sure but I figured I could take being laughed at vs. not knowing.
I have looked at some of the RAM mounts and I see some potential there but was looking for some ideas or even pictures of some clever ways to install a gps/depth finder in this type of boat?? Thanks

GPS doesn't care which is bow or stern. Or whether you are in forward or reverse. It computes it direction of travel and speed from multiples sattelite feeds and displays accordingly.
If your GPS displays north at top and you are going east at 5 knots, the display will have speed and the indicator will point to the east.
If your drifting at 2 knots the indicator will point in the direction of drift, even if you are drifting sideways.

Cabela's has mounts that clamp on the gunnel. West and other retailers also have mounts that you mount on the seat or gunnel. I bought one of those portable transducer brackets from Cabelas. Worked great. No drilling in the boat. As stated, does not matter where you put the gps. I assume you have a tiller motor, no console. I got me a Maritime myself. 20 Pioneer. Great boat. Rigged out, head turner. Just wish it was faster. Capt. Matt.

I love my M-Skiff! What they lack in speed they make up for in a dry smooth ride. What type of power do you have on yours? Mine has a 115 Yamaha 4 stroke. Full throttle & best conditions she will bump around 35 knots but she cruises good at 25 knots and about 4800 rpm.

Okay, here we go.....

The method I used was to make a cardboard template so I could properly relate the angles and flanges to the fabricator. Once I had the template he cut and bent the 1/8" alum to match the angles. I took it home, tweaked it slightly, drilled the holes and planned the layout. As you can see it has the sonar on top (Hummingbird) the key switch and warning horn, hour meter, amp meter, 12 volt outlet, amp meter switch, running light switch, transducer switch and a small item holder. I know it looks a little busy but it is after all, COMMAND CENTRAL........ If you need clarification just let me know and I'll be glad to help out......

The side "angles" are filled in with a composite, 1/2" material I had laying around......

SP.... Obviously my solution wasn't what you were looking for. Show us (with a pic) the inside of your PolarCraft and I'm sure someone will have an idea.......

Options are good, very good....... I have had them mounted in pistol cases, portable units sitting on the rear bench seat, and just sitting on the floor of the boat. Jon boats are sometimes tough to get just right.....

BaileyBoat--What a clean, well thought out install. Best I've ever seen for a small boat.

Mounted my old Humminbird to the top of my tackle box. Kinda big hard-sided Plano tackle box. Let me move the thing around when I went from bow to stern, fishing or running the boat. Got a few chuckles about it from fishing partners, but it worked pretty good.
