I have convinced my wife it's time for a new boat. We like the Ken Craft 206. The dealers in the area all are pushing the Yamaha F200. Cost and reliability are my concern. What is the right choice? EFI-HPDI or Four Stroke?

Howdy, WAB.

Any Yamaha is going to be a good engine.

For best overall performance, including smoothness, noise, economy, you should go with DFI 2 stroke or a 4 stroke.

I prefer EFI 4 stroke, but I am not in a big hurry. Others prefer DFI 2 strokes.

The only reason to go with carbs or EFI is to save at the front end. In the long run you would regret the decision.

Good luck.

go with the four stroke for noise and reliability. if you need a quick whole shot you may have to go to the two stroke since the fours are slow in this respect.

HPDI!!

Why make four strokes when you can do it faster in two?

Why 4 strokes? maybe some of us want an engine that will last more than 1500-1800 hrs. like it or not that is the average for v-6 2-strokes. i guess for racing the 2-strokes are still the way to go. if you are considering 4-strokes don't let these bashers make an important decision for you. sea-tial them for yourself. i did, and i was impressed enough to buy a pair. good luck

it depends on your needs....if your an ol timer and gas is not a problem go with the efi or carbs...otherwise go dfi or 4 stroke.i prefer the dfi but others swear by the 4 stroke.

4-stroke is the way to go, but just bring money. Also, 4 strokes are heavier and for a boat the size you are looking at, you may find the extra weight will prevent the engine from reaching full-tilt-up. That is a nasty problem and one you don't find out about until you own it.

WAB, depends on the dinero and application. I just did this drill two months ago. I have owned carbed outboards but here is what I found. I live in California for the rules are a little different in reference to emissions. We need to comply with 2006 EPA regs.

Choices: OX-66 Yami, HPDI or 4-Stroke.

OX-66 bullet proof and well proven. I have heard from two sources they will not offer this motor in 2003. I can't buy a boat for Cali with a OX-66.

HPDI was my choice since it is still a 2-stroke (less moving parts) and meets the 2006 EPA standards (yeah!). Great motor now with 19 hours on it and runs great, no smoke, no stink, good on oil and gas. Also pops off and runs smooth on the slight key turn. Nice.

4-Stroke is a great motor, smooth torque band, quiet at idle, great fuel efficency. Cons, more moving parts, timing belts, changing the oil, heavier and bigger. More dinero $$ about $3K more.

Just my $.02.

I agree with pretty much everything said so far. You wan either DFI or 4 storke. Both have great fuel economy but the 4 stroke does weight more.

Before you make your final decision, get a price on an Evinrude with Ficht. Why ? Even less moving parts than the Yamaha HPDI. Less parts, less chance of something to go wrong.

WAB, my wife and I have also come to the agreement that it's time for a bigger boat, something in the 20'-21' range. I like the looks and what I've heard about KenCrafts. What won you over to the 206?
