I HAVE A 99 200 SWS YAMAHA. IT HAS RECENTLY STARTED TICKING. THIS TICKING SOUND SEEMS LIKE IT IS METALLIC. PREVIOUSLY IT DID THIS SAME THING THEN LATER BLEW A POWER HEAD. IT STARTED MODESTLY THEN AFTER OUR LAST TRIP IT HAS STARTED DOING IT MORE. PRIOR TO THAT TRIP I REPLACED THE PLUGS. MY QUESTION IS COULD IT BE THE PLUG OR I AM HEADED TO ANOTHER POWER HEAD? CAN I DISCONNECT PLUGS WHILE IT IS RUNNING TO DETERMINE IF IT IS A PLUG? WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON? ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

sounds like the wrist pins are going bad, better have it rebuilt before it throws a rod and really does damage.

Is the engine OX66 EFI? I have 2000 models that sometimes tick - goes in and out and sounds more like electrical arching than metalic. I was told by a technician its the EFI system firing the injectors.

I have a 2002 F115 with 30 hours on it. I also notice the ticking but really only at trolling speeds. I do not hear it when the engine is in neutral and I do not hear it when I get above 1000 or so RPM's. I wonder if it's the same noise?

I can't imagine it's back because if it were, my guess would be it would get worse as the rpm's increased.

I did hear a ticking in my 65 corvette a few years back. Torn down the engine and found a wrist pin ready to go- would have blown a rod through the block. Thanks god we caught it in time. But that noise did get louder as the rpm's increased.

Does the engine miss when you are hearing this ticking. Could be a plug wire arcing because it is either improperly installed or routed too close to a grounded source. If it doesn't stumble or miss the sound is probably the fuel injector solenoids as they cycle. I seriously doubt that the problem is wrist pins. They wouldn't tick but rather a notable knocking. Try using a piece of a wooden broom handle against an ear. Touch the other end on various components until you hear the loudest vibrations. That will at least let you know the area the noise is coming from. Then you can decide if it is a problem or not.

Oh I forgot to mention that yes you can pull one plug wire at a time while it is running. Be sure to use an insulated tool or heavy (welding) gloves because of the high voltage. Pulling and grounding one plug wire at a time is a good way to isolate a bad cylinder, plug, wire, injector, or coil. You should notice a definate drop in rpms and stumbling as soon as it is disconnected. If the rpms don't change then you have found a problem on that particular cylinder.

Thanks for all the advice. It doesn't stumble and the ticking speeds up as more throttle is applied. I noticed it this time while we had already gone 75 miles and started trolling. It seemed to get worse as we kept going. That was three weeks ago and Friday is the first day I have put it back in and it seemed pretty bad. If it is the solenoid how much am I looking at? Is it a hard problem to fix? Like I said it happened before and was a prelude to blowing a power head. There are no knocking sounds yet (I know that sound from when it blew the last time) I really appreciate all the help.

I HAVE A 2001 OX66 250 AND JUST HAD THE SAME PROBLEM THAT YOU DESRIBED. WITHIN ONE HOUR MY ENGINE SHOT DOWN AND LOCKED UP. NO WARNING, NO BEEPS, NO NOTHING.

AFTER A 3 1/2 SEA TOW IT WAS DETERMINED THAT MY #2 CYL. HAD BURNED UP.

I NEED A NEW POWER HEAD.

NOT A GOOD THING TO HAPPEN WITH NO WARNING SYMPTOMS.

I AM HAVING TO MANY PROBLEMS WITH THIS NEW ENGINE.

Your motor has a draw tube behind the 02 sensor
housing. That samples fuel from the inside of the cylinder. When the draw tube gets plugged with carbon they leak around the out side of the tube and sound like a lifter noise "loud tick"
There is an updated tube available that burns the carbon off better, better investigate this ASAP, could cause an unnecessary engine failure. Makomagic

I have a 2000 Yam 250, have not had the ticking noise....yet. However I do have a good tool for you guys to use to pull spark plug wires. Go to an electrical supply house (or Home Depot, etc) and buy a cheap fuse-puller. I think they cost about $5. Work quite well and you will not get zapped.
