Default Yamaha f250 rev limiter ?????

I have a crazy question! What exactly happens when you hit the rev limiter on a yamaha f250 and at what rpm will the rev limiter kick in?

6100rpms and nothing happens because the limiter stops the motor from going pop.

Thanks, Was testing props today and on a light load I actually hit if for a short amount of time. Felt just like you describe now that you described it to me. Does it do a lot of harm to hit the rev limiter? As far as I know the only time the engines rpms have gotten that high was on two short occasions today while testing the props.

My f250 limiter holds rpm at 6100 feels sort of funny as motor is held back. Mark

It does no harm to have the limiter engage. It is just an electronic circuit in the ECM controlling the motor that cuts in to limit fuel supply and override the throttle setting. Somewhat the same thing that would happen if you just didn't push the throttle all the way forward, so don't worry at all.

One of the nice features of electronically controlled engines is that they can have self-protection programmed into the ECM. So if you lost oil pressure or developed an overheat condition, the ECM would also kick in and limit rpms (to a much lower level than 6100 rpms of course).

Rev limiters are there to protect engine from someone installing wrong prop or trimming up too high. They can only cut controllable parameters such as fuel and ignition. it is t here to protect engine from valve float where an open valve can come into contact with top of piston or connecting rod is over stressed.
The rev limiter can't stop you from over revving when prop load is suddenly eliminated. The engine speed can then increase at such a rapid rate and the inertia can lead to the engine going far above the limiter speed. That is how engines die.
