Default Lake Erie and Erie Canal

I will be bring a boat down from Lake Erie to New Jersey. I have my charts , cruise guides and chart plotter chip for the trip. Looking for any hints, personal experience, tips and good area's to stop at. Any thing new happening in the Canal or Hudson River we may run into. The boat is a 50' Sea Ray which we will have all safety gear plus so and all crew has many years of experience. Thanks

I would go through the welland canal and run Lake ontario to Oswego, then down to the canal rather than entering the canal in Tonawanda off the upper Niagara River. It will save you about 120 miles of 5 mph canal running

I am bringing my boat the opposite way next week and have found Doziers Waterway Guide to the Great Lakes to be very helpful.

i've made the trip both ways (oswego and tonawanda) and it remains two of the best times of my boating life. you can't go wrong either way. enjoy yourself and have a safe trip. if time is an issue then "my turn" is right about oswego. remember though while you are idling along through the erie canal. it was dough out by hand by irish immigrants in less than three years.
