Default Moriches Inlet on Saturday ?????

On way in from Tuna fishing Saturday afternoon, we came thru Morriches Inlet around 3:00pm. Anyone else see that MESS and does anyone know what happend to the boat/passengers that was flipped over just outside the jetties with cops and coasties all over the place?? Looked like they were searching for bodies?? Hope not.

But man, I've never seen the inlet look so bad. And it was calm out, that's what amazed me. The tide was lower in the Inlet than I have EVERY seen it, and it was outgoing against a small 1 foot ground swell, but it was sucking up and breaking right in the middle of the inlet where a sand bar (yes you read right), a sand bar, had formed.

Of coarse, ya had about 50 18 foot bow riders dragin bait thru it all....

Default Moriches Inlet on Saturday ?????

Birdman,

One of the moderators on the noreast.com board (doughboy) posted a little info about a capsized boat at Moriches that day on an unrelated thread titled "Heads Up". I guess everything came out OK, otherwise I'm sure the media would have been all over it.

Lots of bodies in that area. Isn't that where that plane crashed a few years ago?

Default Moriches Inlet on Saturday ?????

Birdman,

We left Moriches on our way to the Hudson around 2:30 Saturday - picked our way out to the west, but there was very little water anywhere. Did not see the excitement, so must of just missed it. Came back around 2pm Sunday - glass calm the whole way back, figured the inlet would be fine - no dice - white water the entire width. The east approach through the breakers and around the jetty was impossible, there was about 30' width of exposed sand just inside the jetty. We picked our way west and found a chute of lightly breaking mess that worked - but it was dicey. And this was with a dead calm ocean. We saw a small runabout almost broach in the whitewater - but they stayed upright.

I think low tide Thursday morning should be pretty interesting! Only silver lining is that the bar should make the inlet nice and protected for fall bassing.

Also - tide was still ripping out on Sunday, so we did not even see the bottom. Can't imagine what it was like at dead-low.

Default Moriches Inlet on Saturday ?????

Birdman, an 18footer flipped outside the inlet out by the shoals. Three people in the water. I heard another boater calling CG when I was about 1/2 mile inside of inlet, ran out to assist, and heard from other boaters that that 3 in water had been picked up by seatow and boatus. Arrived in area and about 20boats were cruising area, so decided to stay out of way.

ddr,
Yeah, that is EXACTLY what happen to me on the way in on Saturday. I did make the East Cut entrance though, but I would not do it again, stay on the west side now. That sand bar in the inlet is unbeleivable!!
