Default More power out of Volvo 5.0

I'm trying to get more power out of my 1995 Volvo 5.0FL. It has a 2 barrel carb setup so I was thinking a 4 barrel may give it a little extra. I have been trying to find a marine 4 barrel intake for the 302 Ford engine but don't have any luck. Could I just use an automotive intake? If so which one will work.

The engine is in a heavy 24' Wellcraft cabin cruiser and I can get it to go 30MPH (GPS) WOT with 7 people on it. Should I just be happy with that performance or can I do better?

Obviously I can spend tons of cash and throw in a big block in there but I'm trying to work with what I have and spend little.

look at the jegs or summit catalog online they will have one, they sell steel ones for marine use I beleive,if you are in freshwater use an aftermarket aluminum,if you are in salt water you can use an aluminum one but flush the hell out of it and keep and eye on it and plan on changing in about two years of course this depends on use,

Comp cams grinds a line of marine cams, toss one of those in the engine along with a higher rise intake and a 4bbl carb will give you the most bang for the buck. You should be able to pick up 20-40 hp if you pick the right parts. There are aftermarket aluminum intake manifolds with cast in bronze water passages, one of these would be the way to go. Or, convert your boat to fresh water cooling and run whatever manifold you want, marine or automtive.

Engine longevity is inversely proportional to power output. You simply need a much bigger motor with more torque. All this "horsepower" talk is based on full throttle at maximum rpm. Forget working with that little 302..you will NEVER get what you want out of it. I've got TWO of those in my 24' Blackfin..I'm real familiar with them. Great motors, just small.

Drop a 5.7 in there if you want more power, you could buy a used complete take out if you search around. ....

There is no substitute for cu.in. Small cu. in and HIGH rpm = more hp. Like suggested try and find a rebuildable 351M. Talk to the experts and hot rod that motor. Be sure to get the right cam or it will fall flat on its face. IMO

But, he could do a cam, manifold, and carb for around $800, way cheaper than a drop in 5.7L.

Unless the boats current performance is unacceptable, I would be hesitant to throw a thousand bucks into a 12 year old engine for what would probably be minimal gain. Save up for a repower.
