Does anyone have any experience with the “Trim Bright” LED Underwater Trim Tab Lights made by Avalon Marine? I was thinking of getting a set, but not sure about their quality. Anyone?
The biggest thing I can't figure out here is they talk about how quick and easy they are to install, they require no drilling through the tabs, etc, but they make no mention of how power is supplied. Wouldn't that require a hole in the hull?
Does anyone know how bright they are. We had some thru hull light installed but they don't impress me on brightness. I am looking to maybe add these for more light.
Beware of a company called Avalon Marine Products in California who makes these TrimBright lights. We purchased a few sets from him, but they soon started to rust after 2-3 uses and also leak water in some cases. The owner, Marc Levine has since disappeared and we are stuck with rusted lights and no way to warranty them or get our money back.
Maybe a stupid question, but what's the advantage of LED lights on trim tabs?
Attract fish/bait. Lights mounted on tabs would be nice alternative to drilling holes in the transom or the bottom of the hull. Also, beats the crap out of carrying around and deploying and retrieving a hydra-glow of similar.
I've seen lights that mount to outside of the transom (you don't drill a 1.5") that mounts up like a transducer. The power cable feeds back into the boat just like the transducer cable. Can't think of the name or where I saw them.
---- EDIT ----
Found them. I have no clue about their quality. Anybody have any comments on these?
Most of the ones that ended up like this were less then 2 months old. Some were only in the water for 2-3 trips.
We ended up refunding our customers in full and absorbed the loss.
..........2-3 trips!?!?!?
Man, that is just wrong. They look nice new, but if they aren't made to be taken into salt water (or from the looks of it ANY water), the manufacture should explain that up front.
I can't imagine this company being around for long.
Thats a crime to charge what - like $800 for those, which I think is insane anyway even if they were made right.
I'm going to make my own this winter (don't laugh) out of way better materials.
Will post project as it progresses this winter.
Look awfully a lot like those POS lights posted above, don't they?
You can call Hurley and ask him about it; obviously those housings in the photos aren't 316 stainless, some cheap Chinese crap...
Halogens aren't as bright as HID lighting (which I ended up with). Another "strike" for trim mounted tabs was the fact that you have to haul the boat to change the bulb. For me, that's a big deal. If you trailer or dry stack, not so.
Wow! Those went from shiny and new to crap real fast. I would have guessed them to be high quality from the first pic, just goes to show what a little salt water can do to materials not built to withstand the environment.
