Default Anybody Running Mercury 300xs ??

Just looking for users of these engines as we are considering a repower and these engines would represent a significant boost in HP with LESS weight than our current Yammi OX66 225's. Anybody love or hate em ?

Unless I have a go fast boat I would go with the 250 ProXS I know guys running the 300XS on Bass/speed boats and they love them but for longlife and run on 87octane go with the proxs which are still pushing close to 270hp.

Thanks for the info. I am running a 30' HydroCat and a little more power would fix cruise and top end as well be easier on the fuel according to most reports.

I just re-powered my boat with three 300xs's earlier this year. My experiences thus far have been mixed.

When running, they are fantastic. My optimum cruise went from 1.4 @ 40ish to 1.6 @ 50ish. Noise levels are down, and speed is way up. I just ran to Bimini from Port Everglades, cruised at 61-62mph both ways @ about 4800rpm and I could listen to the stereo the whole way. Very nice. Holeshot is great and the visceral noises they make at 4000+ rpm give me a chubby every time I hear 'em running.

On the down side.....

1. I blew up my first power head (stbd) after only 10 hours, while at IDLE! It took Merc Racing nearly 6 weeks to supply my dealer with a replacement power head. (note: dealer had the order in the day after it blew up, and had the power head back on the day it arrived, so kudos again to Sundance Marine) Needless to say, I was pretty peeved that it took Merc Racing 6 weeks to supply a warranty replacement - thats 6% of my warranty period!

2. While over in Bimini this weekend, the power head gasket on the center engine (not the replacement!) partially failed and the engine started spitting water out the exhaust ports on the back. Not good. It would pull only 0.7psi at idle and thus would overheat at idle if not shut down or jumped on plane. Thankfully the gasket held together enough that it would still pull about 10psi at 4800rpm thus making the trip home more pleasant than it would have been on 2 engines. Sundance ordered the parts on Monday and - guess what - they are on back order!

3. The only engine that hasn't failed in some way (YET) is the port engine and, if you ask me, that motor is already slightly ill. Nail the throttles and the center and stbd rpm's rise in unison, port engine lags behind. Port engine requires more throttle (or trim) to maintain same RPM. Port engine doesn't want to reach max RPM unless trimmed to the moon. Throttle cable is good, throttle plate opening all the way, prop in perfect shape, etc, so its nothing obvious.

So there is my 0.02 on the 300xs motors. My 225 Opti's were 100% flawless and, last I heard, ktrain had already put another 150 hours on them without an issue. My 300xs's only have about 45 hours on them and I've already been out of the water several times, one major failure, one minor failure, and one possibly impending failure. Not good, IMHO. Who knows, maybe I've just been unlucky. I know folks that have 3x and 4x the hours on theirs without a single issue..... to be honest, I'd be less annoyed if Merc Racing readily stocked more parts!

Hmm... so the 300 Opti's only run on 91 octane? How in the heck can anyone own these things when most marinas (at least those in my part of the country) only have 87 and, rarely, 89 octane? Mercury really needs to make a 300hp Opti that is more tolerable of the lower grades. That's really dissapointing... I had my heart set on a 300 Opti when I upgrade to a 24' bayboat. Damnit!

I have a pair on my 34 Fountain, and they are great engines. I have over 400 hours on mine now and they are very strong.
My boat performs as well as other trip 225 opti 34 fountains, top speed of 63 mph, and 2 mpg @ 40 mph, 1.5 mpg @ 50 mph, 1.3 @ 63 mph,

I have not experienced any issues like Rick has, and I bet once he gets the gasket fixed that will probably be the last of his troubles.

Mine have been great, and the only problem I have had was a popped gearcase on my port engine, but I think it was caused b/c my engines are mounted very high, and I can maintain good water pressure with a lot of trim (sportmaster gearcases)
The gearcase failed after running 50+ mph for over an hour and a half straight offshore. I believe it failed b/c it overheated from most of the gears being out of the water. The new gearcase was on backorder and it took 3 weeks to get shipment

I will have 3 300 opti's on my next boat,

They run premium plus oil which is $17-19 @ Academy, the burn rate at 5000 rpm is 40:1

Rick, is your port engine your only counter rotating engine, if so, that is typical of the rpm's to be less.

If that is the case and they are turning out(counter on port), you may wany to turn them in and see if you pick up any speed, From what Alden Thornton told me, Fountain supposedly now rigs them turning in rather than out, it helps get more of the bottom out of the water.
