Default Gantry crane-anybody build one with wood

I need a gantry crane-prebuilts are over 1500$ for the widths I need 12' wide 8' tall. I need it to pick up 600lbs.(outboard) and I dont see any reason why I could not build one out of wood. Any ideas/suggestions.

I'm thinking with the price of wood now a days by the time you buy the proper wood needed for that span considering time...... You might want to spring for the pre fab. They are easy to assemble/ break down, get a trolly for the beam and casters for it, you have it made brother. Just the ease of using one and the time it saves, you'll be more than satisfied. Just my thoughts though. It's your show.

I would try to find an existing hoist and pay them to use it.

OOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRR, you could call a crane company up and rent a boom truck and an operator. Not as much as you might think. No worries, no hassles, he's in, he's out, boom your done. They'll charge you a minimum of four hours though. I can get one here to lift a roof top unit off a building for around $350 bucks. You might be able to pay cash and get a deal.

Try the equipment rental shops. You could rent a back hoe for a couple hundred a day

Thank you for all of the ideas-This is why this forum is great- honest/compassionate exchange of help. My situation is unique. My dock is 300' from any hard surface, I have a 4000lb forklift, but am afraid of driving down my dock with it, if there was a failure I would be ______! I will call for some rental ideas. Thanks!!

Or you could have the boat towed to someplace that already has a lift.....

Do you have a high and dry storage close by? Tow it there and have the forklift pick the motors up and place them on a trailer.
