Random Quote: Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance !!!!!
Gents-
In the market for a used 04/05 reg 23 with a single-
Worried that the F225 is underpowered?
I have run an older 23 with a SWS225-and its a dog-
You really have to get on it to get the boat to plane-
Any comments or if anyone has one that they are thinking of selling
I would have thought a F250 would be ideal for this boat but after looking at their web site I'm not so sure. From 3500rpm to 4000rpm it really surges in speed. This would indicate that the boat wants to drop off the plane in this rpm range.
I did not see a test with a 300hp. Would be best to try and get an on water test with a Suzuki or Verado 300 fitted.
I can understand why you may want a single. I chose a single too when I could have fitted twin 150's. I was hoping Honda would have a BF250 available when my boat arrived from the factory in November 2005. Good thing I didn't wait as Honda still don't have a 250hp.
I have one with the F250 and it is fine but by no means a speed demon. I don't go offshore with it. The majority of my fishing is inside 5 miles of the coast. How you are going to use the boat should determine the power option you chose.
The yamaha published numbers are right on if that helps you.
Well I just purchased an 02 with a single F225. Yes above is correct this boat is not fast at all. WOT I have seen 38-mph at 5500 (might need a prop change) rpms with 3/4 tank of fuel. My boat has many options that add a significant amount of weight including a anchor winch with a stand alone monster battery located in the console. I found a nice cruise at 4600 rpms at 28 mph. Not really sure on the fuel mileage just yet. My old Scout would only top out at 40-mph and speed was never an issue as rarely would conditions or my wallet allow that speed.
Stop calling regulator a dog! Its a very heavy boat and the advantage is a super good ride! I have a 67 233 formula hull 1967, basic a 24 degree pre regulator hull. very very light. with 250 hp yam 2 stoke on bracket 4000rpm-34 mph--------5600rpm-51mph but!!! she floats like a cork on water, and the ride is not near as soft as a regulator.
A buddy of mine just pulled twin f150s because he was very unpleased with the performance (too slow)...he now has 200 hpdis but I haven't got the report yet...I think 200s are perfect for that boat.
That's surprising he would need more power for that rig. I guess it's hull design? I've got an 07' - 24' Robalo with twin Yami 150s and it's got plenty of juice. It's a much heavier boat too (5500 lb with engines). Add 200 gals. gas and it's a tank. I'm out of the hole almost instantly and very happy with a cruising speed of 26 mph at 3500 rpm.

So it does happen
I have witnessed the same thing, a 32 regulator pulling twin F225's for hpdi's.
