Default How do you keep seagulls off your dock?

I installed stainless screws strung with stainless wire the entire length of my railings and it just does not seem to help much.
I'm this close to hooking up a low voltage battery to the wires to keep these crapping dump ducks off my dock. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Don't know if it will work for gull but my dad installed a sprinkler head with a motion sensor on it to keep the ducks off his dock in Maine and it works well. Just have to remember it's on or you'll get wet. Ducks usually show up at night and in the early morning so he'd turn it on when leaving the dock and off when getting to the dock in the morning. I'd imagine the gulls are a problem 24/7.

Thanks for the suggestions. I should add that my pier is about 120 feet long and the ramp probably another 30 feet. Need to come up with a way to keep them off the railings on both sides of the pier and the ramp.

we run a small string down one side and hang surveyors tape from it to flutter in the wind. Another (illegal) option, I know folks who shoot one, let him lay for 3-5 days and then kick him overboard. The others won't come near while he's dead there. You just have to shoot one every few days. Or, get a cold drink and set a few rat traps on the dock and have a good show. :D In my personal opinion, there are too many seagulls anyway and some initiative should be taken to control their population. They get splattered on the bridges around here all the time and are in every parking lot.

Tried putting as plastic owl on the pierhead, watched a seagull take a crap on its head within a week. Looks like a snow owl now.

Imagine all three in a death match on your dock.

use 80lb mono instead of wire. they cannot see this. put nails every 10 ft or so to keep the line taut. works well.

You will have to run two wires close together for the zapping idea to work. Otherwise with a single charged wire the birds will be like winged rats on a high voltage utility wire. No path to ground = no zap.

Those cones for the piles work well. The birds can not land on them without sliding off. And the caps are cheap too.

The dock itself is another problem. Maybe you just need a dock cat? You can get these for free, and they work for cheap cat food.

We use those triangular flag lines - like they use at the used car lot, only white so it doesn't look so much like a carnival! String them piling to piling - looks festive, and keeps the birds away. WE also found we didn't need them close in to shore - just the last 60' or so. Good luck!
