We have an agreement . . . we will organize the tourney . . . we even have a sponsor willing to give some prizes

We need four or more volunteers to get this a bit more organized and to get a more formal proposal out to THT members.

Questions include:

1. A date and duration . . . two weeks

2. Catagories . . . off shore . . . inshore . . . surf etc.

3. Matching boats and those who want to crew . . . swapping crews etc.

4. Tournament Rules

5. Social and other events

Once we get the concept together we will then present the concept to all of the THT members

Who would like to volunteer?

Auguste

I will help out however I can, not sure how much time I'll have as the spring is our busiest time for completing work. I can also look for some sponsors as I have many friends here on the OBX. Let me know what I can do.

Paul

PS- I believe you and I were already scheduled to get together for this same time to do some fishing, hope were still on.

Auguste,

I would be willing to help out with the "stats" side of organizing this venture.

I was thinking about initially just setting up an Excel spreadsheet "blank" for starters to get people on the "list" and set up some catagories as to: WHO is coming (and how many in their "party"), WHEN they could come (for actual fishing), who would be bringing a BOAT (for fishing in the tournament), WHAT "category" they want to fish in (offshore, inshore, surf, etc.), etc..

This would also make it easy to e-mail amongst the folks involved in the planning.

I think the FIRST thing is to set up a possible DATE - you have said you would want to fish for a couple of weeks BEFORE the tournament, so I guess we're looking at mid to late May for the actual tournament? We would leave the selection of the actual date(s) to YOU. Would probably be best to have it END before the Memorial Day weekend - possibly the week/weekend BEFORE then?

There will probably be many folks (including me) that may only be able to come on a weekend (verses during the week). That will certainly be fine, but we must get all the info on WHO is coming WHEN, etc..

Keep this post open as a "communication link" for the event and we'll see what happens. We will ultimately have to set a deadline to get all the names of those who will "commit" to the tourney.

Let me know your ideas at this point and we'll go from there. REEL OBSESSION can be of GREAT help at his end, too - as his time allows.

WE NEED INPUT FROM ANY AND ALL WHO ARE INTERESTED!!!!! I have only made a few suggestions here, so there are LOTS of folks out there that probably have some great ideas!

It will be IMPORTANT to know how many BOATS will be available, FISHING CAPACITY (people) of each boat (as determined by owner!), how many just want to FISH but will not be bringing a boat (I may be boatless!!!), WHERE to launch (public ramp across from Pirate's Cove & Oregon Inlet ramp are probably the 2 best places to meet for launching), etc.. I envision the tournament to be "based" out of Nags Head - somewhere near the causeway to Manteo? Plenty of hotels/motels around there.

DATE(S)???

Regards,
Bruce W

Would the actual tourney be a 2-week event?

Maybe have 2 or 3 days for the "official" tourney, and a designated "meet-and-greet" day prior to the tourney, or in between tournament days. This "social" day could include all folks, whether they want to fish the tourney or not, and could include the ladies, children, etc... a day to hang out, check out each others boats, etc...Maybe the tourney could be Thursday, Friday, and Sunday, with the social day on Saturday. The tourney could be at the tail end of the 2-week period. The remainder of the designated 2-week period could be spent recreational fishing (or pre-fishing the tourney). I doubt many people will commit to two weeks, but during that period, many people would likely come and go...

In auguste's words, "just thinking out loud"...

BruceW

Everyone say welcome to our statistician and registrar of entrants. Appreciate your joining. Good idea about the spreadsheet etc. Yes we need a tournament headquarters site. Another good idea

Drifter

Good suggestions re the dates. I thought a 2 week derby which included 3 weekends would provide greatest opportunity for many THT members to participate . . . you raised a good point re the number of days someone is allowed to fish in each category . . .

marti

Could make it a two week long derby, but you can only fish 2-3 days and you must declare in the morning that you are fishing. Seems to me though that if the object is to get to meet as many THRs as possible, the best way to do it is just hold a one dauy tourney on Saturday with a meet and greet on Friday.

Capt Dan

I like the idea of each person getting to chose three days to fish during the two week period . . . that allows many members to attend according to their schedules

However, I will go with whatever the majority would like.

I'm picking my vacation for next year within 10 days. I only have six weeks of vacation next year but would be willing to donate a week to be on the Outer Banks to help out any way I can.(sit at a ramp to check in or weigh fish, etc.)
But, I would need to know what dates within the next 10 days.

Bruce, maybe I'll see ya down there and we can go on a boat hunting trip in Manteo and Wanchese. You bring your expertise in digital photography and I'll bring my useless knowledge of Carolina boats!!

I am already commited to the 1st week of June in Hatteras. Don't know if I can swing 2 weeks that close togethe buy maybe a long weekend. 1st set general guide lines and date. I think the number will decide how long the turny is. A 1 week turny is pleanty, not sure what real value 2 weeks gets us but lots more work orginizing it. That area can handle a crowd all at once. Pirates cove would be easest to work out of but think there are a couple new marinas in manteo that might work. I like a week long turny. Fish 4 of 6 leaving last sunday off. Awards/eaten and get together Sat after turny. Make check in early that day but later the others. Sunday, is a recover day. If you make it Memorial Day weekend you get a extra day for most.

You are right . . . we would have more luck pulling off a shorter tourney

Everyone

Is the memorial weekend a good weekend for a tourney?

What are your prefered dates?

Wellllllllll - let the games BEGIN!!! Lotta' stuff up here ALREADY!!!

Let's try to get started with a few basics:

0) FIRST, it is VERY IMPORTANT that we find out ASAP a) how MANY folks plan on coming down, b) WHICH weekend they would prefer (see #1 below), c) who would prefer to fish DURING the week (vs. the weekend), d) who would be coming for a WEEKEND ONLY.

1) Looks like Memorial Day weekend will be May 29-31 (Sat.-Mon.). The weekend of the 15th & 16th or the weekend of the 22nd & 23rd will be the 2 PRIOR to Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day weekend will probably be quite busy and a lot of the motels will be "week only stays", I think, starting then? Might be hard to get a Fri.-Sat. room at that time? Room rates will also go UP around or the week preceeding the holiday weekend. Although, a 3-day weekend would be nice for all participating - Memorial weekend WOULD work if everyone would prefer that? I still wonder about a Fri.-Sun. (checkout Monday) with the motels on that particular weekend?

2) I think a 2-week tourney is a little long - unless some would prefer one weekend verses another? It may be that we will have to get together TWO weekend tournaments? For those of us that may have to come down on a Friday afternoon or evening, the weekend will be kind of limited to fishing Saturday and/or Sunday.

3) Some of us may be able to spend a week down there - others only a weekend, or possible 2 consecutive weekends. I agree that few will be there for TWO weeks (except Auguste!). We must enable those who will only be there on a weekend to enjoy the atmosphere of a tournament and meet as many folks as possible in the time given. Just my thought on that, as some will have more "vacation time" than others.

4) I think the public ramp across from Pirate's Cove would be a GREAT place to "headquater" the festivities - PLENTY of parking lot (for cars & BOATS!), restrooms(!), fishing/lounging pier, decent ramps, etc.. Will AUGUSTE be keeping his boat at Pirate's Cove (condo canal or the marina) or at Oregon Inlet for the tourney? Oregon Inlet Fishing Center probably wouldn't be too busy that time of May either, but is about another 8-10mi. down the road from where most of us would be staying. Plenty of parking there, too. At the same time, Oregon Inlet would be closer to BOTH inshore AND offshore fishing! Any other thoughts on the home port?

5) Let's set a tentative "deadline" for November 30 or BEFORE for everyone who wants to go to "get on the signup"??? I have already set some spreadsheets for this purpose and other "stats" and will start logging folks in as soon as we decide on WHICH WEEKEND or WHICH TWO WEEKENDS!!! I think we need to get a head count BEFORE we go stretching this out into a 2-weekend affair!!! We may have 20 folks, we may have 100!!!

Keep the ideas coming and VOTE on this thread for the weekend you want and/or other periods and I will start getting a better idea on the FINAL vote!!!

PLEASE RESPOND SO WE CAN GET THIS HEAD COUNT STARTED AND INCLUDE YOUR CHOICE OF A SPECIFIC DATE YOU CAN PARTICIPATE!!!

Thanks and I'll be WATCHING this thread!!!

I'll volunteer to help, no problem. As far as the marina at Pirate's Cove goes I wouldn't count on getting many slips that time of year. The ramp across the street from Pirate's Cove has tons of room and there are plenry of motels in Manteo for you guys who can put them in daily.

Give me an idea of the number of people and I'll call Pirate's Cove and a couple other places down there for wet space.

The Hey Blondie now officially calls Wanchese home [boat is stored at Harbor Welding] so you can count on my help.

Looks like the plans are moving right along. I do know that Janet and I will be there in May, but I also know that we will not be there over the holiday weekend. We have one absolute rule about heading down, that is we never go on holiday weekends. Its bad, and its even worse if you have a boat on the back of the fruck.

Also, it is my understanding that most of the motels will accept stays with a minimum of 2 nights (possibly 3 on holiday weekends) but not overnighters. I only get that information second hand though. We stay in Rodanthe, at a camp ground. Its 15 minutes south of the public ramps at Oregon Inlet. Works well for us.

As for the time. Out of IO in mid may its pretty much a tuna thing. Last couple years most of the OI charter fleet has been fishing down off Hatteras that time of year to find fish. 60 mile runs that time of year are going to limit a lot of us on the offshore thing. Too early to tell what Hatteras has to offer as far as hotels but Holiday inn is still there, all the hotles in buxton are ok. If its not a huge crowd I would give Hatteras a thought. Village marina/campground could handle most of us and Techs Lair could handle the trailer crowd better. That time of year Hatteras is almost a goast town. Did I mention the fishing better and closer down there that time of year.

I might be interested in coming down for the this, My dad has a house on the Sound in Pirates Cove so I have a place to stay and slip the boat. I am curious as to what fish will be running in May? And will there be fishing to be had for a 20' boat?

Auguste, since you are comming from so far away and staying 2 weeks I would give thought to staying 1 week at Hatteras and 1 week at Oregon Inlet. 2 very different places. You can damn near walk to everything at Hatteras. You can get a resonable room amnd rate overlooking your boat. Email me at
formula233@comcast.net
if you want to low down at Hatteras. Been going there since I was 6 and I am 42 now.

Looks like we are developing the critical mass to pull this off . . . LOTS OF GOOD IDEAS COMING IN, DON'T STOP

I would be more than happy if some of the "local boys" could choose the date and location . . . you know what and where is best . . . I can work around what you chose

Seems date and location are needed by many so that they can decide if they can participate

What do you think ?

I will gather names and dates as they are posted. Please also include your e-mail addresses and I will forward the list as it evolves. I will forward the list of participants a PDF format so that we do not have problems opening Word or WordPerfeect files etc.

This is starting to be fun
