I've been plenty of PVC made rod holders for the back of pickup trucks but was just wondering if anyone has something unique. If you're proud of your work and it's PVC, I've still like to see it.
Just trying to get some ideas of what to build......I travel with at least 6 poles every weekend I go to Beaufort (3 freshwater, 3 saltwater) and I really need something to keep them off eachother and so that the cooler doesn't slide into them and brake one if some idiot decides to stop in front of me on the interstate again.
I would ideally like something that held around 10 poles...
Come on THT, lets see what ya got! I know there are some creative minds out there...
no pics but ,I used a 72 qt iglo cooler mounted rod holders to it (8 pvc) it sits up against the cab mounted to cleats. in the cooler I carry raingear ,tackle ,soda ,beer etc.it helps that I have a lockable cover when at the dock(rods being with me on the boat)
Or even making something that would attach to my toolbox

I have seen a 4 x4 which was notched and ran from one side to the next. He then drill out holes which slanted to the back of the truck which he had PVC mounted down into the holes. He also had cut a small pad which he ran across the edge of the 4x4 where the reels would come to rest.
I made one last year that worked out very well and I have received a lot of compliments about. Because I do not have a tool box in my truck I mounted a 2x8 in the vertical slots that are molded in bed. I cut the board to a tight fit and it left roughly 12" to the front part of the bed. After having the 2x8 cut to length, I removed it and planed the top edge so that a 1x10 could be mounted flush to the top forming an L and covering the gap left between the 2x8 and the front side of the bed. From there I flipped the L that was formed and screwed 4 6x6 metal L brackets to the underside to provide it with support. Form there I bought 8 plastic rod holders (15 deg.) from West Marine and cut holes in the 1x10 to accept them. From there, I painted the holder black and stenciled the boat name on the 2x8. It is nice looking, removable, and securely holds 8 50wides upright and locked in by a gimbal. 80s can be carried by staggering them one reel up the other inverted reel down. I hope this helps someone, I have held on to my invention long enough guess it is time to spread the wealth.
That's a horrible, horrible idea. One buzzard, trash bag or other type of road debris and all your rods are trashed. Not to mention flying gravel and bugs.
Mounted to front or standing vertical in the back of the truck is no place to keep your equipment while doing 70 mph.

I forgot to mention that I hate the sight of the rod holder attached to the front of the vehicle, I think it's really tacky. I do like the rod holder that slides into your reciever and not only holds rods, but a cooler too. Only problem there is how are you going to tow your boat?! I was thinking I might be able to weld something similar that would fit in the back of my truck with the rods at an angle facing backwards.
I did this with treated 2 x 6 and plastic rod holders...never had a problem but will go aluminum with new truck. The "wedge" is cut 45* from the base board. Kinda backyard lookin but gets the job done. It was 8 holders spaced to hold shimano 30wides.
PM Sharkbait to get a picture of what he made for his truck using PVC. I believe he can carry 8-10 rods, semi horizontal.
Note: I would never carry rods mounted on the front of any vehicle but rods mounted vertically in the back are no problem - I have a 4 rod holder on the back of my Jeep. The chances of a rock kicking up, missing your windshield and hitting one of your rods toward the back of the vehicle are slim to none. Now I just jinxed myself!!!
You can see the one I have mounted on the back of my tool box in a picture here. Just look behind the hog. I got about 10 bucks in it. Been using it over 3 years now

Bumper mount rod holders are used by surf fisherman who drive on the beach. They usually don't drive on the highway with the rods in the front bumper rod holders though, but leave the rods there for easy transport while scoping out large sections of beach while driving on the sand.
Don't know if this is exactly what your looking for. Made this a couple weeks ago, probably $25 total in material from Lowe's and about 3 beers time to make. I'm sure you could find a way to bolt this down in your truck.

I think I'm going to build something like for storage in the garage. Those pre-build wooden rod holders with the casters on the bottom just don't hold enough for me and are way overpriced.
I think I'm going with something like this but with an extra row of rod holders. I might try to make it sink down into the bed so the rods aren't riding so high in the air.
I would like it to have c-clamps to attach it to the bed rail so I don't have to drill any holes in my bed. Only problem there is finding a cheap aluminum c-clamp, or figuring out a way to fabricate one. Anyone have any good ideas for attaching it without drilling into my bed rails?
I'm going to either weld a rod on the bottom end of the tube or just use a bolt to lock the butt of the rod into the holder.
Got any good ideas or suggestions? I'd love to hear them.

Hell,I been riding my rod n reels standing in the back of my truck for years without any problems. My holder is a piece of 3/4" treated plywood that is 13" wide by x across the truck with a 1"x4" on the outside eadge.I had mounted those flush mounted PVC rod holders(30 deg type).7 of them on the first row(close to the cab of the truck) and 6 on the next row. They are mounted 7" on center. That way 50w don't touch each other. The hole that is in the bed of the truckis were it is mounted to.I got two of those rubber mounts and some big flat washers and longer eye bolts.I had glued a rubber strip were the board crosses the bed of the truck, drill a hole thru the plywood centered over the hole that is in the bed of the truck. From there,I started the eye bolt with a washer, thru the plywood, thru the rubber mount, screwed into the lower mount part. From there I just sliped it into place and tighten it down.I did get some rubber coated cables that I can pass thru each reel and lock them in place, but most of the time I use rubber cords to just hold them in place.Everybody that has seen it loves it.No more broken rod tips or scrashed up reels.Total cost was around $50,I had the wood.
Just curious if anyone has some more pictures of an all pvc rack that fits in the back of your truck bed. I'm going to buy the pvc pipe and fittings tonight and build it tomorrow

no pics but in my old truck I bought 4 sections of 2 1/2 in pvc 10ft long and cut them in half I notched out one end of each so the reel would slide up into it and staggered and glued all of them to the ceiling of my topper with epoxy 8 rods out of harms way and easy to grab
try the cooler method so you can put all your rain gear, tackle, etc in the cooler. the cooler needs to be tied down if using heavier rods like my internationals. I use a strap to keep it from falling over or one of those bars that cross the back of the truck behind the cooler. works for me ! oh yeah keep your drags tight if your keepin your riggin on as I made that mistake as well
