i was starting to think the same thing but I was wondering about expanding and contracting with the zip ties. I have heard of using the ties to hold the top in place while you lace, but never thought of just leaving them there
Zip ties may work well for a while. Some are not UV-resistant and the sun will eventually kill them and they will become brittle and fail. Also most ties depend on a little metal tooth to hold the strap tightly. I know of several instances where a corrosive environment caused the tooth to let go...
All that said, I don't see any reason not to try them. Look for outdoor rated ties with a non-corrosive tooth (some are the same nylon as the rest of the tie).
Good luck.
Here's the thread... I used the black 3/16" dacron double braided radio antennasupport ropefrom t3rockhalls suggestion at radioworks.com.. Came outperfect BTW. Was not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be. Took 2 of us about 90 minutes to do the Grady. http://www.thehulltruth.com/forums/t...ode=1#M1568237
Thanks for the info all. I need to replace mine also. One section of mine let go on my drive back from Marathon last summer. I did a repair job with 80lb leader on the side of the road. It has held really well, so I haven't hurried to replace it yet.
