oil tank cap

What would happen if the oil tank cap was left off? See my other thread. I blew a power head and my friend filled the oil tank for me and left cap off and after a day of trolling the next day about 20 minutes of running around 3500 RPM's it went south. Could the cap off the tank be the reason?

most of the oil injection systems work off pressure so not having a cap wouldn't let the tank fill properly. However, i would think your motor would have a low oil level warning.
