Default Need Help--Trouble with old 9.9 Johnson

My old man is running a mid-80's 9.9 Johnson on his lake (freshwater) boat. It runs fine, but has nearly stopped pumping cooling water. The water pump was ancient, so I put a new one in for him when I was home for Memorial Day weekend.

The old impeller, despite being ancient, was fine and the new impeller didn't help anything. It is getting water, but it just dribbles out of the telltale. After a few minutes, the water is coming out HOT. At startup, it takes 15 or 20 seconds to get water to come out at all. What gives? Is something plugged up?

check thermostat (does that motor have one?) to make sure not plugged up or siezed. If it has one, just replace it.

On that small motor you should expect a small stream showing within a few seconds regardless of the thermostat
setting I think. Best guess is the intake screen or blockage in tubing. Also clean the pee hole with a toothpick ect
and see if it increases. With a thermostat closed I think the pee hole should still be pumping water and provide the
relief flow for the pump, so it should be flowing either way. Just a gues!

I have two votes for checking the t-stat. How does the t-stat block all water flow if it is fouled or not working properly? It seems like whether or not I have flow through the engine block, i.e. t-stat closed, I should still have a good stream from the telltale.

The problem is, I don't know how all of this is routed in there. Can anyone help me on this?

there is likely dirt/crud/corrosion obstructing any bypass hole. Just change it, clean the area out and youl see.

I had the same problem on a 1973 6hp, suddenly no water. Its cheap, just do it.
