Default Oil "leak" on side on yamaha f-150

ok, this is the second time I have seen this on my engine, after the first time I took it to the dealer and had them check it, the result was "we checked all fluid levels and all are ok". So now 4 trips later I see it again, this time on the opposite side of engine. BTW after 3 trips to the dealer, my engine still whines while idling about 1/3 of the time, mechanic result was "ran engine on water hose for 15 min, no engine whine heard".

So here are the pics, anything to be concerned over, exhaust maybe?? Checked inside of cowl, everything looks fine.

I'm not sure if it would come out at this location, but Yamahas are known to leak oil when tilted all the way up....if the oil level is at or near the 'top' mark. I'm sure others will chime in...ask andy in SIM forum.

I dont know the year of yours but on my 07 150 the Oil Filter is on that side of the motor. I would check all the seals on the filter and also look on the inside of the motor well on that side to see if there is any oil in the bottom.

Stanley winthrop is also right, the "known leak" is usually caused by not seating the dip stick all the way back in to the tube to create a good seal. When you tilt the motor all the way up the oil runs out of the top of the dipstick tube and out the cover on the swim platform. I would check that as well.

Do not tilt engine and checked inside of cowl for any oil, no oil seen around filter or dipstick. Always looked at the boats in the marina on full tilt to keep lowers out of water and wondered about the "no tilt" thing. Will check everything again this evening and see if I can see anything.

thanks

Checked everything again, dipstick is clean, no oil has come out of there, but there was a small amount of oil in the bottom of the cowl, under the front end kinda below the fuel/water sep. Looked at the filter also and no sign of a leak. Where could this oil have come from?? should I get it checked out??

So does this mean that if you keep your boat in a slip, you have to keep the engine in the 'down' position?!?!? Thats the dumbest thing I've ever heard of! What do they say about keeping your impeller intake clean while the lower unit is below water all summer?

If this is true, then it soundslike a design flaw..

One possibiilty is that the tech spilled some oil the last time it was serviced.

i dont work for 'em so i cant answer ya.

i know what you mean though as far as keeping it tilted up while in the water. when i keep mine in the water overnight, it goes up.

mine's never leaked. i have heard that some folks run a hair less oil in them and it keeps it from leaking when fully tilted.

I look at outboards a lot--I guess I'm an outboard voyeur--and I haven't noticed any F150s or 200s with an oil leak like yours. I'd want to know where it's coming from.

I am with Stanley Winthrop, there is a good chance it is spilled oil. Best thing to do now is clean everything so you are certain it is free of oil (cowling, bottom of motor). Then check the oil level on the stick, use the boat a few times and then check again, see if oil is laying anywhere and check the oil level to see if it has gone down.

One more thing if you haven't done it already pull the cowling off and look around inside. There are 2 screws in the front by the transom and then about 4 screws at the top of the cowling coming down from the motor area.
