Default Leaking Sea water pump- Rebuild or Replace

It is a volvo penta sea water pump on a 1995 5.0 liter. Only one year in salt water. It is leaking a little. After seeing it was about $300 for a new one I thought I might just rebuild it..Please advise.

I would replace it. I have a 1991 Volvo 5.7 and have replaced it a couple of times. Don't spend the money on the Volvo. River Marine has the Jabsco for $130. If you ever run the pump dry for a minute or two it can cause the seal to start leaking.

Volvo pumps are built by Johnson if you want a direct replacement. I think the Johnson units are a little higher quality. Most of the wear parts are replaceable, including the edges of the hose nipples which errode away over the years. If you can get a seal kit and the shaft/housing are in good condition, there is nothing wrong with rebuilding it.

I think they will bolt on. Using OEM parts has the advantage that you don't have to remember that you're using something different next time a repair comes up.
