Bottom paint and Keel guard?

They say if your bottom has never been painted, you must apply a barrier coat to seal the bare fiberglass before bottom painting. I am told that bare fiberglass is porous and will absorb water in time causing blistering. Now if I want to install a keel guard, they want it installed on bare fiberglass for best bonding. But, how is the fiberglass under the Keel guard waterproof without a barrier coat? Should a barrier be applied before the Keel guard? Will the Keel guard bond to the barrier properly?

I would stay away from the keelguards they wear out! and then you have to remove them which is a pain in the a^^
I just removed one from my skiff I would never put one on again!!
To your question the hull in the area where the guard in going to be installed has to be free of all paint,or barrier guard.
