I switched from US Boat to Progressive this year. When I quoted on line, I selected 75 miles offshore as my limit but when policy arrived it showed 50. Progressive has agreed to step up to the 75 but you should check your policy if you fish offshore. They said it had something to do with state limits but that does not make sense. They're researching it.
They could have company limits on how far out they will cover a boat and most of the time these rules are filed by state. Maybe the 50 miles is what comes with the policy and they can endorse the policy for coverage farther out. The good thing is you read your policy which most people never do.
He is talking about insurance not tow insurance they asked me the same question when i got my policy. Went with the 75 miles but i'm going to check anyhow. Thanks
I have Progressive and last year it was a 50 mile limit. This year with the renewal it is a 75 mile limmit. The boat has to be at least 26' with twin engines or it will remain a 50 mile limit. The extra 25 miles was no extra charge to the policy. I live in Florida so it might not be the same where ever you are.

They said Texas and Florida were the only 75 mile states. Everywhere else was 50 even though the on line quote said 75. To their credit, they are looking into the situation and have agreed to extend my coverage.
I have a 25 World Cat with twin Hondas and unlimited TowBoat US towing insurance.
Just wanted everyone else to know this could be an issue.
I to had Progressive Insurance and with a special rider (had to call them) was given insurance for the Bahamas at $75 a trip which in most cases is over the 75 mile range.
imanutskie - 6/4/2007 What does coastle waters of the us mean insurance wise???200miles????
Sorry - a clarification: No-where, no-place, no-how does any recreational boat insurance policy cover you if you are 200 miles from the US shoreline unless you have a seperate rider stating so.

Not True...Inamar/ACE has no limits(Yachtsman Policy)--It is up to the Operator/Owner of said vessel.

Inamar/ACE is one of the worlds largest insurers of boats, but I do not believe they insure recreational boats under 30 ft? You may know more about them than I do?, and I'll change my statement to read: "most" recreational boat insurance policies have offshore limits that are no-where near 200 miles.
It will be interesting to see in the next few years with the hugh losses boat insurers are taking, if Inamar/ACE and or other insurers will continue with no distance offshore limites policies on recreational boats under 30 ft? Some of the major recreational boat insurers (Allstate) have already stopped insuring boats over 26 ft! or boats that are kept less than 1 mile from the ocean (State Farm)!
ok so just what does coastal waters of the us mean 1' from the coast 1 mile 100 200 what .My policy states all inland and coastal waters of the us.When I asked she says anywhere until your out of gas guess she didnt know about my extra tank
Progressive on two boats--one 27 feet with twins (cat) and one 25.5 feet single with kicker--and both have 75 mile limit written on policy. I clarified the 25.5 footer, and it is OK for Alaska, as long as am within 75 miles of coast. I do have to get a rider for the Bahamas per trip.
Progressive's base limit is 75nm for most states except for states with older rate revision codes (by brief scan, some of those states are NC, CA, GA). Those are 50nm. For those states with 75nm, they have an endorsement called "Extended Navigation" which extends the 75nm to 125nm. There is no rule limiting the number of times a boat can exceed the 75nm limit. The qualification is the vessel must be 26 feet in length (LOA, Centerline, or LWL is not specified in this rule which is odd) and have twin engines. Sailboats must have single inboard.
Interesting that a person can purchase the 125 extended navigation even in Wyoming. I wonder how many Wyoming folks trailer their boats to the ocean. Must be a general program design.
