Default Do jet boats go 92 mph

I was in lake yesterday and saw a jet boat running around with a HUGE roostertail. Usually these boats are not too fast so I thought I'd see how fast this boat was. I asked the guy and he said 92 mph! Well I didn't believe him and neither did any of my buddies. He had a dual quad 460 with a Coozie jet drive. I asked him to show me and he said it was too rough out. To be fair, there was a little chop and this boat was a 15 or 16 ft. Anyone heard of a jet boat going over 80 mph?

i would have call BS on that 1. I just don't believe a 15~16 could run that fast, regardless of the propulsion type.

I have seen drag ones go in the 150mph range with full canopies at the Augusta Nationals a few years ago. If he has enough HP, then 92 is not unheard of. These are not your sea doo jet drives, but performance drives made for drag racing. My dad had an 18ft Hondo flat bottom with a v-drive and 454 that would run 110 in the quarter, but faster top end if you changed the drive ratio. You would only run the boat that fast on super smooth days, so the too rough defense is probable. Also, there are plenty of 15-16ft boats that can break 90. For just a foot or two longer, look at the mod-vp hulls like an stv or liberator 18. With a 300 opti, these boats are running 115 or faster.

I did 60mph in a 17' boat but it felt like we were going 100mph sitting that low in the water. That was enough for me.

When I was a kid, our neighbor had a jet boat. "the classic 80's speed boat"
I think it was 17 or 18 ft, and had a supercharged big block on it. chrome headers and all. Looked like a fully exposed dragster engine sitting on the back of a bass boat painted white.
It was suppose to have 650 hp, and he said it would do about 102-103

I never rode on it, but my friend, the guy's son, said he had to turn his head to the side to exhale. inhaling was no prob.

I'm sure if a sea monkey farted during a high speed run, the boat would have flipped.

Been there, done that. 460 Pantera dual quad drag jet boat straight gas. They'll most certainly do 100mph and more. If it's smooth, no problem. It gets hairy faster than you can snap your fingers.

i had one with a 514 cid ford with twin 850 carbs back in the day.not all the best of everything but all i could ever get was the 70's.i'm sure the have made some gains on them now but i was always told that a prop boat with equal motor could outrun the jet boat.

Jet boats have been running over 100mph for a very long time. These boats are most popular on the west coast (California, Arizona, Texas) also on the drag circuits in the midwest. I did own a ski jet boat that ran 110mph

Well I'll be damned..... Is that the correct spelling of Coozie? I couldn't really hear the name well. When he said he was clocked at 92 mph with a beer in his hand I stopped believing him.

I have seen them on FW lakes get up into the low 120's. It was really cool but almost unbearably loud. They would set at the starting line and wait 10-15 minutes for the water to settle down before they got the green.

Let me just provide you with an example of a 140 foot Millenium yacht owned by John Staluppi with twin 5,436-hp MAN Paxman diesel engines driving Lips waterjets and 9,200-hp Lycoming gas turbine, driving a waterjet, the speed it obtains is 70knots and that is on a 140 foot yacht. So I don't think because it's a jet drive it will keep it from running 92mph.

For your reading pleasure.

If you saw the Travel Channel Mega yachts series, you would have seen this yacht going for the 70knot run!

Back in the early 80's I was on a Barefoot(?) with a overdone 427 CID, built by a race engine company claimed 700+hp and 90+ MPH. I went once and I NEVER want to do that again. Made 145 in a car seem quite civil.

Don't know if we actually went 90+, (no GPS) but I've been 65 and this seemed about 10 times as fast.

Everything seemed normal up to a certain point, then you sorta entered the twilight zone.

I've been 93 mph (by speedo) in a buddies Hydrostream Vector with a modded 175 Merc. That was a blast! Everybody should do it at least once in a lifetime...Sounded like the water was gonna rip the floor out of the boat.

You should check out jetsprints, kinda like rally driving on water.

"Because of the high power-to-weight ratio, a jetsprint boat has exceptional performance, capable of accelerating from 20 to 120 kilometres an hour in two seconds, and pulling very high G-forces similar to jet fighter aircraft in corners and under acceleration."
http://www.jetsprint.co.nz/index.php

"To accomplish this at speeds of 70-90 MPH through the corners in the Super Boat class the driver/navigator are subjected to 6-7 g's. In a 90 degree corner they average 3-4 g's."
http://www.ussbaracing.com/WhatIs/index.html

http://www.ussbaracing.com/General%2...nelsonrace.wmv (this is a ride in a jetsprint boat. If you like the sound of a big V8 screaming you will like this.)

Its a wild sport.
By the way 120 kmh is only 75mph but jets can go much faster.

Can jet boats run over 80MPH, yes.

Could that one run 92, I'd bet money it would not. If he's making a huge roostertail, he's not going anywhere! Most jets are all show and no go. We used to joke around about guys like that with all their speed claims. We would tell them we weren't sure if we should make an offer on their boat or their speedometer!

Grab a handheld GPS and make him prove the boat runs 92, and I'll bet it will be too rough that day as well!
