Tranny Problems I fished on Friday and something just seemed off with the boat. It didn't sound right and it was hard to get out of gear.
On Saturday morning I was checking my fluids and found my port tranny had water in the oil. (350 Crusaders with Velvet Drive 5000 Series trannys). The only place it could come from was the oil cooler so I quickly set out to find a new one. I found one but it wasn't an exact replacement, but knew I could make it work. I got the new cooler installed (rigged is more like it) and set about flushing the tranny.
I pumped out the tranny and re-filled it. I ran it at the dock bumping it in and out of gear and pumped it out again. I did this twice and found the oil cleared up. I also pulled the plug on the tranny to make sure I had no water sitting in the bottom of the pan. After the second flush I took it out and ran it for a little while. It sounded better and shifted easier. I flushed it one more time and the oil looked good, with no signs of water.
The next day I took it one about a 1.5 hour ride. All speeds, stopping to run it in forward, reverse, etc. I then flushed it one last time. Again the oil was clear and the boat ran great.
Now time will tell if I saved the tranny. I think the probelm occured on Friday so the water wasn't in there long. I also don't think it was a lot of water, just enough to make it noticable in the oil. Looking inside the tranny with a flashlight I did not see any rust that would lead me to beleive it was in there from the following week.
So, besides all the flushing I did is there anything else I should have done or should do to help save the tranny? |
