Default Are Peninsular Diesels the same as Detroit Diesels?

I'm looking at a used boat with Peninsular diesels, are they same as Detroit diesels? I was cautioned against Detroit diesels. Thank you.

Nope- not the same. Cautioned against Detroit? Thats a pretty sweeping statement. Many Detroits have excellent track records.. others, not so much. That's usually the case to some degree with any manufacturer.

Someone should have cautioned you against peninsular and NOT Detroit diesels. Nothing wrong with X71 and xV92's. I even like 8.2's if they are no more then 300hp.

Run away from the Pennisular, they are trash with horrible track records. Detroits are among the most reliable diesel powerplant out there.

I had a peninsular. It is a GM small truck block (poorly) marinized. They have all kinds of issues and parts are hard to come by and expensive. It needed glow plugs just to start and ate alternators and starters for breakfast. Fuel system would airlock and it couldnt be bled right by cracking the injectors. Total hack. Run away!

Had 8.2s in a 29 Phoenix. Traded it in last year. Motors were 24 years old with just under 2000 hrs. Still ran very strong. Leaked a little oil and burned a little oil but were quiet and very good on fuel...........Mine were marinized by S/S and were twin turbo rated at 240 HP each...........

Have over 1000hr on a 98 Peninsular no issues at all on mine. Not the best engine but not the worst. 71 series are loud and love too leak but are bullit proof.
