Where does everyone have the stereo speakers mounted on a center console? I am about to cut holes, and only have 2 speakers. I am thinking firing them towards the motor, but the front passengers wont hear. If I put them on the front, I wont hear. What about the side. Would anyone hear them?? Lets see what everyone does
On my Scout I had them about thigh high facing the stern. I could hear them fairly well while running and for some reason you could hear them almost as well on the bow. I think the console must have acted as some sort of conduit for sound...
I have 2 in the bow facing aft and 2 in the footcove of the center console firing aft and slightly downward. Both sets are protected well and sound gets to forward and aft passengers.
Mine are on each side of the console. I'm not able to hear them while running, but that's probably more of a function of the cheap stereo I have than the location. I don't use it much when running.
I guess I could mount them up towards the bow on the gunnel near my fuel filler. There are inspection plates on each side so the wiring wouldnt be too bad. Ill have to see if there is a flat surface there to mount them to.
Mine are similar to matts in location but I have 10" babbs in the front and 5" babbs in the sides...with a 250 watt amp so does'nt matter where you are in the boat you can hear it...
Damn, Ttat sounds like a serious system. I have an old Alpine amp laying around suitable for mids and highs. I may slap it in while Im into it. Then I would have to run a fatter cable to hook to the battery...hmmmm,Decisions
In my last boat, a 25' CC, I put two up in the bow gunnel, facing back, and two in the gunnels on either side of the helm chairs. Everybody could hear just fine.
I had mine mounted in my electronics box under my T Top. I wanted to get it as far away from my compass as possible. When I asked this same question here I was told the rule of thumb seems to be that speakers should be at least 18" away from your compass. Mounting them in the sides of console will throw your compass off unless you take precautions like building boxes around them. They sound good and are also out of harm's way up high.
One on each side of the console facing outwards and two smaller ones facing doen out of the electronics box. No problem hearing while underway--but it was before I added the two under the box.
I'm getting ready to add four to my 85 Mako 20...if I can get the courage to actual cut into my boat. I'm going to put two on the sides just just forward of the under gunnel rod holders and two in the rear facing forward. What are you going to use to cut? Saber saw, roto zip or hole saw? I'm still looking for a 5 1/8" hole saw or just might go the roto zip way as that is what everyone recommended when I searched the forum.
How about fitting the box type speakers under the gunnels facing down? The sound should reflect up off the floor. The will be out of sight and protected from the spray.
I like the idea of having them protected by the gunnels, but I think you'll lose a lot of the high end. High frequencies are very directional, and they don't bounce around like the bass notes. You've got to have them pointed at you...
On mine, there were two at the base of the center console, about ankle high and I was not happy with them at all. And the Jenson POS!
When I added the electronics box, I added two PolyPlaner round speakers facing down. Those are my "front" and the low-mounted ones are my "rear". These are on a car-unit JVC with a 4-foot Digital AM/FM antenna.
Now I can hear every note, every word at WOT.
I mounted mine under my electronics box also. You can hear them great all around the boat and even when on plane with a Carbed Johnson 150 screaming behind you

Parker 21SE, 200 Evinrude
Bruace, I did the same on my Parker, two forward and two aft and it sounds great. You can't see the speakers at all and it was a piece of cake to wire. No holes to cut, just a couple of screws for brackets and the speakers don't catch spray or sunlight directly.
Be REAL careful regarding your compass. Hold the speakers at different locations and watch for any deflection in the compass.
I've got 4 on my CC. Wouldn't want to try it with 2. 2 are mounted all the way forward facing aft and the other two are mounted abeam of the console. No amp but a 25w/ch head unit. All that air space and fiberglass turns a boat into a speaker box.
Like most stuff, don't do it on the cheap. Try not to buy a $100 Jensen radio, I don't think you'll be happy. Find a way to get 4 speakers mounted.
When you don't have a radio, 2 speakers and no power seems fine....for about 2 trips....then you wish you'd sized up a bit.
Just did the satellite radio gig. What a pain the a$$ to get it done...but, really cool having all those tunes far offshore.
I have decided to mount them where the inspection plates are. I have cut the holes, and will wire them up tonight. I will post a pic and details when done. Thanks for everyones input
