Default My outboards just keep going..and going.

Many of the responses on this forum is bashing either a specific brand of boat or an outboard engine. Just for the record...I have had some minor problems with my 1990 Evinrudes 225HP but one thing is that they have never failed to run. I have never been on a hook to be towed in nor have I ever felt "that feeling" that they won't start. I've owned outboards from Mercury, Johnson, and Evinrude and I've been happy with all of them. The beating these engines take with long periods of no use makes me undertand why they be hard to start or are finiky. I know the starting and running patterns of my engines and it's something you have to learn. But one thing I've never felt is that I will have to ask for assistance to get back to home.

You better find a piece of wood to knock on, saying something like that is usually the kiss of death.

I have a 1992 115 johnson that just keeps on going also. I would like to get a new 4 stroke but as long as this one keeps going it just does not make any sense to me.

I know what you mean. I have twin 1989 Johnson 150's (with VRO's) on a 1991 BW 25 Outrage. They have 1100+hrs and with regular maintenence they just keep going. I don't let them sit long without an occasional start up in the driveway though...Hopefully I'll get many more hours out of them (knock on wood).

You might as well go out and put a bullet in it now.... You did it!! Seriously, I hope you get many more years of service from it.

Here is what I am thinking. If I get a new 4stroke so I get better gas milage I will spend say $9000. At $3 per gallon that is 3000 gallons of savings before I break even.

Do you know when an outboard is about to blow? When it runs the best and least expect it. Good luck and I hope you didn't jinx yourself.
