Default 1999 Mercury Optimax

Someone I know told me that the Optimax engines made before 2001 are known to "blow up". Something about the high compression they run.

Is there anything to this, or is it just the result of someone who got a bad one and/or ran theirs too hard for too long running their mouth?

So what does this mean? How would I know if my engine is starting to get this problem? Anything I should watch out for?

My online research turned up a recall letter sent to owners of the 2001 Optimax 200 and 225 HP engines.

Since my engine is a 1999 model, and only 135 HP, I am no longer as concerned as I was! I think I am golden here. I will contact Mercury just to make sure.

Thanks for the input!!

I researched a 2002 225hp optimax before I bought it this April and I understood that the problem Optimax motors were the 1999 to 2001 200hp and 225 hp motors. The problems seemed to be with the fuel rail not coming up to the proper pressure. Also the thermostate did not allow the engine to reach proper operating temp. Some how these problems would cause the injectors to clog and blow the motor. I have a buddy who as we speak is having troubles with his 1999 150hp Optimax motors. I can't remember the issues but they as pretty severe. You may be ok with the 135 hp, I don't recall reading any major issues with that motor.

Had a pair of 99 225's on my 293 Mako...they were nothing but trouble. Injectors went bad pretty consistently, one injector apparently blew up, and fired a piece into the top of the piston and took that piston out. Reed valves were replaced annually...be sure to check those every spring, never could figure out why. Finally gave up and repowered, cost more than my first house, but now I get to go fishing every weekend instead of every third weekend. Not bashing opti's, just telling you about my 99 225's....good luck..t

That's terrible, how could a company put that out and let the consumer pick up the bill, they should have recalled them. I loved our 2 stroke Mercs but the stories about those early Optimaxes put's Mercury low on my list.

Had a 1999 200 Optimax for 6 years. The only problems were two sensors and a lower unit seal replaced. Ran great, but repowered it with a Verado only because of the noise level, not for the running quality or for problems with the Optimax.

No, they are regarded as some of the MOST reliable MERCURY's EVER built by many guides that I have talked to and know.

FWIW, I have a pair of 1999 225 Optis. This will be my second season with them. Before my first season I had a bunch of corrosion issues that needed addressing including replacing both lower units, and I had to do all the upgrades as the previous owner did not do any of them. I had some high temp issues with one motor due to some sand and salt obstructing the cooling water paths, but otherwise they ran great and I did not miss any real time on the water. This winter I had to replace a leaking oil pump, but otherwise just did normal maintenance. We'll see how it goes, but I'm pretty optimistic (pardon the pun).
