Just remember towing 7k pounds and 20 MPG are mutually exclusive.

I hate hearing this stuff because I can't get one. There is some jackass law in NY with the diesel jeeps. Wanted to buy my wife the diesel liberty last year & the dealer told me none can be sold or registered in NY. It had to do with gross vehicle weight or something.
When I asked him "well what about the other new diesel vehicles on the road",
he just shrugged his shoulders.

The issue in certain states is that there are different emissions regs depending on the weight class of the vehicle. Light duty trucks are more in the class of passenger vehicles, heavy duty trucks are allowed to conform to differnt regs. I to am pissed that you can't get a diesel in a light duty truck in NY. I'd consider one if the engine option wasn't too expensive. My 1998 4.0 six gets 12-15 around town, about 20 on the highway. Diesel would improve on that somewhat, but I'd really like being able to run biodiesel to not depend on OPEC one bit! If I wanted a diesel here I'd have to get a Ram 2500 or a Ford F250. I have no need for either, but they are cool vehicles nonetheless.

Couldn't you just buy it out of state, then bring it back and register it?

NY is also the only state that makes you register your vehicle commercial if it's over 5500 lbs ....I'm having a battle registering a new 07 Tundra double cab pickup w/ 5.7 V8 ....The very same truck with a 4.7 V8 weighs about 75 lbs less and can be registered passenger, everything else being EXACTLY THE SAME !! .... ....My Toyota dealer is still waiting to try to conform my vehicle to Passenger standards...I'm overweight by only 20 lbs !!!.... NY has too many bureacrats and too much time to make too many laws ...Jim

No you can't buy it out of state and register it.
I inquired about buying one in Pennsylvania and was warned that NY DMV has it on a list of unregisterable vehicles.

synthnut:
That's true about weight limitations on certain vehicles in NY. However, when I purchased a used F350 diesel pick up, which had been registered by the previous owner as a commercial vehicle, I was informed by a DMV clerk that my 6200 # truck could be registered as a passenger vehicle as long as it had been modified with permanently installed seats. Unless he was mistaken, I don't see why you couldn't get yours registered as such. I also have observed dually diesels with four doors and seats operating with passenger plates.

synthnut, can you just take off the spare tire and be under weight? If you have already tried that, how about the tailgate, seat, empty gas tank? That is one dumb law.

It may be hard to believe but up until recently you could not drive a pickup truck on many long island highways. All pickup trucks were considered commercial and could only drive on designated commercial highways.

What's the dollar difference in NY between registering as commercial as opposed to passenger car?

Too bad we can't import some of these trucks which are available outside the US with even better fuel economy.

Nissian Navara => 30+ MPG

http://www.nissan.co.uk/uk/navara/launch/index.html

With a class leading 171 bhp, which even the all new L200 will not match, and a 297lb ft of torque the new direct injection diesel engine is a perfect complement to the stunning rugged looks.

Or

The Mitsubishi L200 Double Cab => 30+mpg

Power comes as standard in an L200 with the 2.5 litre turbo charged 113 bhp diesel engine, delivering a massive 177lbs. Ft. at just 2000 rpm and will happily pull a mighty 2700kg. The Mitsubishi L200 Double Cab will deal with whatever you throw at it!!

Isuzu Rodeo Pickup sets economy Record
14/07/2006 22:10. A standard Isuzu Rodeo pickup has set a new fuel economy record by achieving a remarkable 52.01 mpg after being driven virtually non-stop from Lands End to John oGroats. The luxury four-door five-seat Rodeo Denver Max covered the entire 853-mile trip on a single tank of fuel, using only 16.4 gallons to achieve the record. It is the first time a diesel-engined one-tonne pickup has completed the challenge and the entire exercise took 22 hours from start to finish.

The 3.0 litre Rodeo was driven by Chris Roberts, Dealer Principal at Isuzu dealership St Austell Motor Group, Cornwall, supported by Service Technician co-driver, Matt Saunders. Chris said: "We practiced a little... // marathonrally.com

Can anyone in NY tell us what the cost difference is between commercial and passenger registrations? I want to buy a crew max Tundra (5.7 litre) next month.

There is no addtional adder for "commercial" plates. Registration rates are strictly by wieght. The more you weigh, the more you pay.

The mileage on the Jeep really isnt as good as I would have expected. Maybe 5 mpg better then what I got with my F250 PSD and you that you wont get the same mileage that Jeep is claiming. I am not impressed.

Nobody moves into NY unless they are looking for a welfare check or running for the Senate..... all the earners are moving out.
