Wide Open,

I think you are comparing apples to oranges. How do you plan to use the boat?

I have a 2001 pursuit 2870 WA with twin 200 hpdis. I love the set-up, not a single problem in the first 450 hours. You can't go wrong with the pursuit.

Sea Ray is a cruising boat you can fish out of, Pursuit is a fishing boat you can cruise. Qualitywise, Pursuit has a better reputation. You can take these reviews for what they're worth. Not the same models, but close.

That caps lock thingy can be toggled off you know, makes it a lot easier to read.

285exp nailed it.

If you plan to fish offshore and want a tough boat that you feel safe in the Pursuit 2870 is a great choice and has family amenities.

If you plan to cruise with minimal fishing and don't plan fishing offshore the Searay will be a better family boat.

If you want the best of both worlds with the strength to go offshore look at the Pursuit Denali.

Smackey,

where did you buy your boat? I may be looking at a Pursuit in the future.

Start here. You can also call Dave Pascoe at the number on his site. He'll probably charge you for anything for detailed than hello.

It seems that pursuit is very well respected on the forum. Are there specific problems with the Searay 290 Amberjack that I should be aware of or is it just not enough of a "fishing" boat? Does anyone own one, used to own one or know anyone who has?

Jeff,

There is a dealer in Va Beach called ski-boats unlimited. Only dealer in VA. I bought mine from pages creek marina down in wilmington, NC as a leftover/demo

My freind has a 29 Searay AJ with twin 454 carbed chevys. Sucks fuel like you have never seen and is slow. I am pretty sure he wishes he didn't buy it because of the fuel burn problem and it's slow. Personally I like the Pursuit 2870 over just about any boat comparable. Not sure if that Searay is even available with outboards, it's a totally different boat if it's the same as my buddies. I actually pleaded with him to get a twin outboard Pursuit instead of the slug he got. But they are the hard headed "we hate outboards types".

I would also recommend you take a look at the Pursuit Denali model for your needs. It is a good combination of fishing/cruising boat, haven't seen anything comparible.
