Default Fuel Quik Disconnect Necessary?

I'm replacing the fuel line to my Johnson 225 OB...
The fuel line comes from the filter (water sep) to a shutoff then to a quick disconnect fitting into a squeeze bulb into the engine. I'm sure I'm gettin air into the system here. Is the quick disconnect a necessity? Can I go direct from the shutoff valve to the bulb to the engine?

Thanks,

O

Could the disconnect be a safety requirement?

Nope. You don't need it. If you had portable 6gal tanks that would be different. Those tank's should always be put on the ground and filled. This is to discharge static electricity. Don't fill them in the back of a Pickup truck either. About a year ago a guy barely escaped. his truck did not!

This is a 110 gal inboard tank.
It didn't make sense to me, but then I thought maybe it's some sort of requirement.
Stranger things have been regulated on boaters! Ha!

Thanks,

O
