Default 96 175 johnnies vro disconnect because of smoke

Have twin 175 1996 Johnnies, They run super but on start up they smoke like my diesels did. I found that when the engines are tilted the oil drips into the carbs thus on start up oil is saturated at the carb intake. Is there a repair for this or should I just go to adding oil to fuel. Smoke disappears after about 10 min running. I keep the motors tilted because I own a wet slip in salt water. Thanks for any input. I did check the search but nothing listed. 2550 Pursuit Twin 175 HP Johnsons JRC1800CP RADAR SITEX CV 106 Garman 492

My twin 1989 Johnson 150's smoke like crazy too, at start up. I suspect that is part of the design to lubricate the cylinder walls after sitting? My VRO's are working fine and the motors have over 1100hrs. I wouldn't think of disconnecting them and going to a premix. What a pain that would be particularly when filling up for a long offshore run. Premixing may reduce range? The early version of the VRO had its problems but was improved long ago....Never heard of any type of repair for all the smoke and suggest if they aren't broke don't try to fix. Alot of smoke is a small price to pay for reliability.

Usually the VRO pump will over oil if the supply of gas to the engine is not there. Say your fuel drains back into the tank from the supply line, and there is a lack of fuel at start up. This is the cause of most over oiling during startup.

Thanks Homey for the info. I really dont want to disconnect but I thought it was worth an effort. Do you store your boat in water with motors up. Seems like the oil drips and accumulates around and in the carbs . Then when I restart I think I have excessive oil plus the oil that is injected on starting. If I could stop the dripping it would solve the problem. Only have 540 hours on them and there great Thanks again.

I always pump the bulbs before starting so I do not think I lost fuel good point any way. motors start very easy and takes about 10 seconds or less and their off and then I defog the marina. Thank you very much for the info. Every little bit of input helps.

yankeedoodle,

I keep my boat on the trailer but the motors are tilted in transport. I don't mind the smoke that much, actually reminds me of summer.

I had the same issue on a single 2000 200hp Johnson ocean pro, had the VRO changed out - still smoked like a son of bi@tch on start up(did not matter what the tilt angle was during storage). Stopped worrying about it since all ran well. Have a diff boat with a 225hp Honda now - kinda miss the smell of oil in the morning.

I've found when VRO pumps get old they tend to bleed oil the the pump into the fuel side. Some get so bad you have to drain the carbs to start them. I have seen almost pure oil in the carbs when draining them. If you start them often its not so bad, let them sit a few weeks and so much oil bleeds thru you can't see thru the smoke.

If you think they smoke too much now do not disconnect vro. At idle manually mixed at 50to1 it will never stop smoking. At least it is bearable now. I had an older merc 150 I disconnected vro. I had trouble selling it because it smoked so bad, but it ran like a champ.
