Default Powerboat Reports ... ends circulation

FYI:

The May 2007 issue was the LAST issue of Powerboat Reports, which, after 20 years, has ended its circulation.

You will soon be receiving a letter from Boating magazine regarding subscription fulfillment. Current Powerboat Reports subscribers will receive at least two issues of Boating magazine for every issue of Powerboat Reports they are due. Boating will also be providing a toll-free telephone number for those who have questions.

I just received the same e-mail. I'm glad I didn't renew on schedule.

I wish I had known that before they let me send them money.

I just renewed as well, BUT: The magazine saved me more than it ever cost me. I am very sorry to hear it is gone. I read it cover to cover every month, something I cannot say for my subscription to boating. They were pretty objective in their reporting and called it like they saw it.

I wonder if the problem was legal or financial......

I just renewed for 2 years... I wondered sometimes how long they'd last without advertising, and their renewal letters always gave me the impression they were desperate for the cash. Didn't they have some sort of lifetime subscription deal a couple years back? Sorry to see them go, but wish I knew it before I renewed.

I am sure that you can ask for your money back as opposed to issues of another journal.

That sucks. Their info and tests were the best.

I received the lifetime membership promo back in 1998-9. It was $1,300 and you got a handheld gps free ($400 value back then). Glad I didn't take them up on it. However, if a few more people did they might still be around.

I guess they've been beaten by online forums. etc. That's too bad; I think I still have some old issues from 1988-1990. I'll sell 'em on ebay in 20 more years.

Does anyone know what they are going to do with the old articles that were online?

I trash most of my magazines after reading; but PBR I've kept a stack of for reference. Sorry to see it go.

That's a real shame--one of the few mags that wasn't afraid to publish critical reviews, as opposed to the puff pieces you see elsewhere.

It does not surprise me! Critical reviews yes, but based on more than one experience, NO! They really never had the money to
do actual research even though they touted it as somewhat scientific. They were no Consumers Reports, Thats for sure! I guess I got lucky by not renewing my subscription!

What is interesting to me is that Practical Sailor, sister publication, marches on.

They should let us switch to Practical sailor, as that mag tests safety equipment electronics and other stuff that can be odf interest to power boaters. Bummer. I have a lot of old issues, too.

As much as I like PBR, this impresses me as needlessly sleazy. I noticed I was getting renewal letters for the last couple of months. My subscription expires in Sept. I know they start hitting on me early but that just seemed a little too early. I guess they were pumping everyone they could before scuttling the rag.

Fwiw, fed law requires a refund for every unsent issue, but you must require the refund. You do not have to accept Boating mag if you don’t want it. I think I would prefer to receive Practical Sailor instead.
