We are in the process of getting back into bluewater fishing on a budget after selling a flybridge sportfisherman and are looking for a used center console that can handle bluewater fishing conditions.

In looking at serious offshore 24-28' center console fishing boats, it seems that the configuration of some boats push the console forward giving quite a bit of "cockpit" space, while others leave practically all the fishing room forward of the console.

If you are going to be trolling, why would you not want as much room as possible behind the console?

Besides the aspects of trim and balance for the boat itself, the further forward you ride in a boat, the more pounding you take. The smoothest ride is the furthest back. On a rough day I have to take reservations for my jump seat, and the bow cushions go untouched!

on rough days you can bring a big bean bag and throw it up against the transom. have a few people sit on that. the best ride on the boat. of course, when you not riding it gets in the way, if you dont stow it somewhere. but its an idea.

I have a GW 263 Chase. The layout puts the console fairly far forward leaving a very spacious cockpit aft. I think the layout works great. Lots of room in the aft cockpit makes for a comfortable fishing layout. I could never understand why most center consoles put the console so far aft leaving almost no cockpit space at the rear. It seems the front of the boat gets cluttered with gear and clothes (at least until a large fish is hooked) and goes unused especially while trolling. In fact, most of the time, the only practical use for the bow area is as a sunning platform for my wife and daughter.

The reason anyone would trade a SF for a CC escapes me but, anyway here goes. The position of the console is a compromise between rough water handling characteristics and fishability; just like deadrise. When you are running in rough water, a console that is placed fairly rearward along with steep deadrise is optimal. However; trolling in calm seas, I'll take less deadrise and more room aft of the console.

i would think anyone buying a cc is interested in fishing, that being said the further bach the console the better the ride.you really dont need alot of room behind console anyway.all you need is room for 2.more than that and you more than likely have people that dont know what they are doing anyway

What ever you decide be sure that you have enough room behind the center console.

Had a boat once that had too little room behind the center console, never again.
