I like to find a boat I can venture out 80 miles out. Looking for a safe boat that will take me there and back with efficiency and comfort in mind. I need an older boat for my budget. I have seen offshore boats priced below 30k. Main concern is that some of these boats don't have big enough fuel tanks. I won't be doing those trips all the time, but will like to do them when the weather permits. Any inputs are great.
I would consider some of the Cat Boats. They are hard to beat in rough water. If you can afford it I would go 24' and up. Its funny you mentioned $30,000, I forget what size it was maybe 23-24' Sea Chaser Cat with twin 115 Suzy 4 strokes, T-Top. Coastal Boating Center in Savannah, Ga. I think It was around 31-32K.

Please join the Captain's Club and sell your boat on the Trading Dock. It is the only way we keep this great forum going strong. There is so much valuable info to be learned and money to be saved by hanging out with this group. The THT's policies are very liberal (even if some of the members are not...right?). Please follow the rules.
Whatever boat you end up with, take another one along for safety. Anytime you're that far out, help can be a long time away. Last year I towed a fellow boater from 65 miles out...he was drifting at 2kts towards the UK from offshore Hatteras. The USCG station could barely make out his radio transmissions.
