Yesterday I was at a Ford dealership having my Expedition serviced and a small problem taken care of. In the process, the service manager drove my car and we drove through the service bay. In one of the bays a fairly new Super Duty was being worked on. They actually had the cab of the truck jacked up off the frame exposing the engine. The service manager said they were changing a head gasket! Seems Ford did not leave enough room to do this without removing the cab. Should I have been surprised or is this common now days?
03-07 6.0 also need the cab off for access to the heads and other major engine repair. On the 08 the bolts are accessed under the frame where as the 03-07 you have to take out all the seats. The big question is why did the head gaskets fail so early on the 6.4 when so much testing was done. The new 6.4 isn't mod friendly either like the 6.0 is.

you don't have to pull the cab off on the 6.0 but it makes a lot easier to access the heads or injectors. Some dealers don't do it and some do. Don't know how the guys work on it with out the removing the cab. It is tight in there!! Pretty cool to see though.
The easiset way to change an engine on the 1999 to 2004 F-150s was to pull the cab as well. It sounds like a real task, but you spend less time taking the cab off than you do trying to work where there is no room. It does make the job easier and faster, but you obviously need the space and equipment to deal with the cab assembly.
About the video of the flames: I think I'm glad I got a 2006. First year of issue always has problems for every manufacturer.
pulled the front cap many times to do engine related work on trucks, nothing new, the green horns are just learning this i guess, as stated above i would question why the engine had to be repaired.

the main reason why it isn't always done is it ties up that bay until the work is completed. If you have to wait for parts the bay can't be used b/c it is holding the cab on the lift

I don't think he actually said it was an 08, just "fairly new." My bet is it was a 6.0.
My brother purchased an 08 F250 twin turbo. They told him that they need to remove the cab for engine work and that even oil changes need to be done at the dealer or it voids the warranty. The damn thing has (11)eleven radiators!!!!!!!!
We just took delivery of a 08 F550 super duty with a 6.4 at work and ya can't even see the motor and it has 6 radiators.

Not exactly true, but there are much more stringent requirements as to EXACTLY what type of oil and filter are to be used. I can't remember them off the top of my head, but if they are not followed you COULD have warranty problems. These trucks are definatley not your father's diesel truck. They are designed to run on the new ultra low sulfpher fuel and a myriad of other new enviromental considerations. When asked if the trucks will run without adhering to some of these new guidelines like ULS diesel and oil requirments, a Ford engineer aswered, "yes, but advise you customer to "expect to have problems.""
You either look at the Ford Diesel as an Engineering Marvel or a Mechanics Nightmare.
You couldn't squeeze a box of twinkiesunder the hood of one of those. I can practically
crawl inside mine.
I just got my 08 F350 with 6.4 yesterday. Traded a 2005 f250 6.0. Cant tell a ton of difference in the power but it sure is a more refined truck. Runs like a gas motor. I cant wait for the flames to blow out of the exhaust!
